I honestly don't know why people are in so much denial about this. I keep seeing variants on "how could POC have possibly been present in Georgian Britain?" like, have these people not heard of ships?

I HATE when people compare AI to the printing press, it's so disingenuous. The printing press was opposed by the elites because it put power in the hands of everyday people, and popularized a vernacular. AI does the opposite, by allowing elites to bypass artists and laborers.

They say "use AI!" now, "it'll make your art, summarize your books, respond to you", but at the end of your life, when you think "I wish I had taken the time to make art. I wish I had read books. I wish I had listened to people." they will not be there to give you back the life you wish you'd lived

Can't help but wonder how US authors would feel if a French AI company stole their novels, and a French court told them they couldn't be made whole because they'd foolishly neglected to register their copyright in a government office in Paris. Copyright is copyright.

Stop treating this like it’s inevitable!! No one has to use “AI” and plenty of us aren’t!
Any teacher using it or encouraging students to do so is a disgrace and should find a different job since clearly they are not interested in the work of actually teaching.

Will AI avatars eventually teach our kids?

Patty, David, and SFWA wasted a lot of time trying to help Must Read come up with a non-predatory boilerplate contract. So did other authors. Some authors walked. Suffice to say Must Read has been on notice for months that their contract's bad, and their response is gaslighting.

My fellow creatives, I’m begging you to purge such thoughts from your mind. I don’t care if it’s your first acceptance ever, or if your word count is in single digits, your work (and you) have value. If your art was worthless, they wouldn’t be asking for it. 2/5

Particularly telling is how Boyne has placed a condition on him withdrawing from the shortlist. If he was really worried about authors being "bullied" into withdrawing he'd remove himself from the running entirely. Not make it conditional on them returning to the longlist. 1/
