An under-appreciated piece of this story is that one of the more liberal members of Congress met with clergy to discuss ICE/DHS, and she found herself to the *right* of several faith leaders whose support for abolishing ICE was so intense that they got into a genuine spat with her over it.

Democrats should defund and restrain ICE to the degree possible. And they should insist on this condition at least: No ICE (or Border Patrol) anywhere near the polls or early voting election locations this fall.

I think this is a very good point, but it would totally go over my head if I didn't know what the word "metropole" meant.
I think the issue this is getting at is that the US colonial frontier was inside the borders of the metropole, which meant that the distinction between internal civilian policing and colonial pacification that a lot of states tried to rigorously maintain has always been weak to nonexistent.
if I’m being honest, I’ve never really liked the “descendants of slave catchers” narrative about cops/ICE/etc., because even shaky historical analysis aside, it ignores relatively recent systemic issues with policing and makes it out to be some Darwinian origin story of “policus Americanus”
