I don’t know if it only makes sense without the periphery stuff, but Nier has books, stage plays, etc. I once asked Taro about this and how are English fans supposed to keep up and he looked confused and asked “Why would you need to keep up? Who needs all of that?”
After "film trilogy that dropped a critical plot point exclusively via timed Fortnite event" and "video game series whose story only makes sense if you're aware of the events of a canon pachinko machine", I feel like there are whole frontiers of user-hostile narrative design waiting to be explored.

A small part of this that annoys me is how these companies won't make certain kinds of games because they're too risky, but they aren't averse to the risks of the plagiarism machine?
Call of Duty making a zillion dollars all the time -- and being supported by a literal trillion-dollar company -- and still using AI for art assets is so incredibly pathetic and infuriating.

The Great American Novel, if it really exists, must be a Western. I've always thought The Great Gatsby comes close but: not enough cowboys. Cormac Mccarthy understood this. So did Bram Stoker but unfortunately his book was too full of brotherly love to qualify. Plus he was Irish.
