I always thought Plato was pretty pollyannaish on this point, but this is decent evidence for the view that a man of bad character will therefore be unhappy even with every external trapping of success and good fortune.
President Donald Trump gifted the world with nearly 200 Truth Social posts (and counting) on Christmas Day, where he amplified conspiracy theories about the 2020 election and called for a member of Congress to be deported.

As I’ve said before — the economy is astrology for men.
The economy is a paranormal entity that our greatest dimensional scholars (macroeconomists) understand only superficially. They have induced a variety of changes in it by manipulating arcane forces like "money supply" with some success. But it remains protean and unpredictable.

I'll never understand how so many people got conned into hating the idea of universal healthcare.
Say you pay 20% more in taxes.
Your employer pays you more because no insurance.
You never see a doctor, lab or out of network specialist bill again.
You have a low copay for drugs.
Isn't that worth it?

This entire country is being scammed — we can afford health care. You reason you don't have the health care you need because someone is making profit. That's it.

There's a couple reasons so many IWW songs are set to the tunes of hymns and one is that the Salvation Army Band would show up and try to stop workers organizing by playing hymns to drown out speeches, so the Wobblies came up with words so they could sing along. SA has been trash all along.
It's that giving time of year again, so this is a reminder that no matter how they try to dress it up, the Salvation Army is not a charity.

I hope someone draws this wonderful story about Tom Stoppard's Arcadia and the power of the arts to help us see things differently, to the attention of our Education Secretary. Do read it, it will lift your spirits.

I’m having that thing where you log on to social and everyone is reacting to the new thing but the reactions are vague, aghast, angry enough that you’re struggling to figure out exactly what the new thing is. German must have a word for this.

It's good to have this on the record.
There are 8 (probably more) Senate Democrats who don't believe in majority rule, and who desperately want excuses for failing to govern in ways their voters want when in power.
Heaven forbid the Republicans get rid of the filibuster…

Whoa -- Sen. Durbin went to up Leader Thune during the vote last night to tell him that on the shutdown vote and ACA promise that "8 of us are sticking our neck out that you're going to keep your word. I hope you will. He said 'I assure you I will,'" Durbin says just now

Here's the part that gets me on the shutdown: The section prohibiting Trump from firing workers is great! But it wasn't carried through to stop rescissions & withheld funds.
That Democrats knew how to write a No Kings budget, then only passed a tiny section of it to get Tim Kaine's vote, is galling.
The Most Frustrating Thing About the Shutdown Cave - The American Prospect
Senate Democrats actually know how to use their power to counter Donald Trump and ensure that legislative funding gets spent—but this continuing resolution makes it clear they chose not to.

The politics of the shutdown:
*GOP had a strong opening position
*Undercut themselves with the RIFs and unnecessary cuts to blue states/SNAP
*Polls showed GOP getting most of the blame, no reason to assume that would change
*Dem centrists then folded on their key issue of ACA subsidies
