You know how billionaires end up with severe cognitive deficits as a result of becoming surrounded by yes men who constantly tell them their every idea is genius? What if we made a bot that just does that to everyone. I think that would be a good idea.

Reminder that the idea of "border security" is political and a result of moral panic. In 1965, Congress passed amendments to the Immigration and Nationality Act that put number limits on immigration and ended longstanding guest worker agreements with Mexico. This helped lead to agencies like ICE. /1

"Tzefardea Tzedek" (Frog of Righteousness)

As soon as the Portland Frog became a meme, Jewish social media blew up with jokes about the 2nd Passover plague - tzefarde'a (frogs) - and the Rabbinical commentary around it. I knew I had to make a calligraphy piece encompassing all of it. (more in alt.)

I don’t know when it’s going to pop for a lot of normies that they are living under an authoritarian regime, but the cancellation of popular TV shows that make fun of the administration might do it www.vulture.com/article/abc-...

The decision follows conservative backlash to a comment the late-night host made about Charlie Kirk.

ultimately i think the central thesis of trumpism might be true nihilism, just the absolute disdain for the idea that anything matters at all beyond winning an argument in the eyes of your supporters. there is no such thing as competence. there is only loyalty and occasionally bad press. that’s it

the only thing i'd add to this is that mainstream political media is very much taken with the idea that trump is some incarnation of the national spirit. it shows up everywhere and is used to explain his political success.
people are mad about this but it's just on-its-face true. trump won the popular vote and because of a few decades of the media priming people to believe that only conservatives can truly represent The People, that popular vote victory was treated as a defacto enabling act
Society generally has recognized him as the embodiment of the will of the Volk in a way that transcends and supercedes the Constitution

Me: Hulk Hogan was a racist scab and a liar. He hated unions, Black people, and the truth and that's why he loved Donald Trump. What time do you want me?

CNN: Great! Well.... so we'll keep looking

one of the stranger phenomena in American life is that hate is supposed to flow in one direction (rural people get to hate urban people, Republicans get to hate Democrats) and if the hate goes the other way people pretend as if this is very upsetting.
The media made a HUGE deal out of "basket of deplorables" and "cling to their guns or religion."

But, of course, it will totally ignore Trump saying he hates Democrats: "I hate them. I believe they hate their country."
in addition to his "shylocks" comment, i can't imagine the media backlash if Biden said anything like from this screenshot - that he "hates Republicans" - and i'm also tired of having this "IMAGINE IF BIDEN!" thought experiment but it's just a constant reminder of the double standards

what people seem to believe is that there is a large number of criminal, layabout immigrants who can be easily found and deported. they support doing so snd are dismayed by the deportation of otherwise law abiding people. the problem is that the criminal group is imaginary!
Wow. New CBS poll finds majority (55%) supports the *general goal* of deportations, but a bigger majority (56%) dislikes how Trump is carrying them out. And 63% want due process.

Again, we need a better discourse around public opinion on immigration, as I've argued:

Over the rest of 2025, a lot of people who tell themselves "everything's fine" because they haven't been personally affected by Trump's evisceration of the government are going to find themselves personally affected.
SCOOP— FEMA essential functions are at "high risk" of not functioning properly just days before hurricane season because of staffing shortages, per a recent internal memo obtained by The Handbasket.

These deficiencies "may disrupt life-saving and life-sustaining program delivery."

Best sources for research on *any* subject:
1,000,000) any website created since 2010ish

3) Books written by obsessive non-academics
2) Contemporary newspapers and magazine articles
1) A handcoded HTML site with an "under construction" gif and a .nl domain, full of txt files
My fellow Old Hollywood lovers know too well that it's the same for us. The more famous the star/film/incident, the worse it is. God help the person searching the internet for actual factual facts about Marilyn Monroe or James Dean.
Researching something infamous like the Zodiac Killer is way harder now than it was even 5 years ago because of all the AI junk that turns up. You have to stick to specific newspaper and video archive sites or… books.
