I've watched thousands of videos from the Jan. 6 riot as part of NPR's reporting and archive project on that day.

Here are some of the lesser known videos that have really stuck with me.

THE DOG IS ALSO A FUCKING PROBLEM
5. I have no respect for Donald Trump. He diminishes everything he touches. But focusing on him right now is like being bitten by your neighbor’s unleashed, unfenced rabid dog and focusing on the dog. If we don’t hold his enablers to account we’re going to keep getting bit.

I remember the phrase "they can't be allowed to melt back into society" re: the de-Baathification of Iraq after the war there. Like everything about that experience, the attempt was cynical, stupid, and botched. But there really should be a plan about what we do with guys like these in the future.
ICE detain father shopping on Christmas Eve—then steal his family's groceries.

Then 3 agents divvy up his paid for food—taking what they want for themselves.

"Can I just get the wife's number to call and let her know?" woman asks.

"No, guess he should've complied," agent says.

Any Democrat who thinks it's appropriate to "find common ground" with the Republicans on issues like high school sports teams is negotiating with a political party that does not believe trans people should exist. This policy will kill people, so maybe stop wringing your hands about volleyball.

100%. watching or reading something does not count as approval of its viewpoint or creators.

basically every action film is right wing. some cop or agent meting out justice, with perfect moral clarity.

trying to police your media consumption for politics is a recipe for making yourself miserable.
It is okay to like a movie even if you don't like the politics it is intentionally or intentionally espousing, or the politics of people who are making them.

It's okay to hate a movie for this reason too! But you don't HAVE to hate it because of your politics.

Just in case any journalist or editor reading this is tempted to minimize Trump's Reiner post because it's a "showbiz thing" and "real" stories are happening: No. It's a President thing and a decency thing, and if you don't understand that those things are newsworthy, you are failing in your duties.

my favorite thing about the benoit blanc movies is that they aren't really about benoit blanc. he is not grappling with demons from his past. we are not getting flashbacks to the husband whose murder he never solved. he just shows up and does his job like mary poppins for homicides

The boat murder story is a perfect encapsulation of the 2025 ethos: it was immediately shitty, and every day we find out a new thing that makes it worse

Trump, continued: "What the Somalian people have done to Minnesota is not even believable. It’s not even believable. And a lot of it starts with the governor. A lot of it starts with Barack HUSSEIN Obama, because that’s when people started coming in... They want to kiss our country good night."

these people have no moral center at all, their ethics are entirely situational, and that is the only accurate way to describe them. They’re not zealots or true believers, they’re opportunists protecting their turf

Trump: "I want the money to go into an account for people where they buy their own health insurance. It's so good. The insurance will be better. It'll cost less. Everybody is gonna be happy. They're gonna feel like entrepreneurs. They're actually able to go out & negotiate their own insurance"

Still very weird that the president of the united states thinks you need ID at a grocery store.
Trump: "It's time for Republicans to do what they have to do and that's terminate the filibuster ... we should start tonight with 'the country's open, congratulations,' then we should pass voted ID, we should pass no mail in voting ... you go to a grocery store, you have to give ID."

"Bury him face down." This barn burner of an obit might feel hyperbolic to people who entered the world in the wake of 9/11; it's not. Cheney was one of the architects of today's American Christian conservatism. He was directly responsible for millions of deaths. Salt the earth where he's buried.

"you kill people and break things for a living" is 100% bad guy talk. Not even trying to hide it.
Hegseth: "A few months ago I was at the White House when President Trump announced his liberation day for America's trade policy. It was a landmark day. Well, today is another liberation day. The liberation of America's warriors ... you kill people and break things for a living."

Hegseth's words seem especially chilling in light of his whitewashing of the Wounded Knee Massacre as a heroic "battle" only a few days ago. The message would seem to be that the Trump Administration is willing to forgive any atrocity US troops may commit as an "earnest mistake."
Hegseth: "You should not pay for an earnest mistake for your entire career. That's why today, at my direction, we're making changes to the retention of adverse information on personnel records."
