if you want artists to make weirder art, you have to create stable living conditions that allow them to. homogeneity isn't a matter of artists lacking culture-- there are many soulful artists out there-- it's a matter of unregulated corporate dominance combined with artists who cant afford to create

there's no work, so we're making our own work, but now we're being told "no you can't do that either" so okay I guess we'll all just fucking die. Freedom to do only as we're told.

I'm looking for stories about how AI is killing creative work, and I'd love to hear from you—artists, writers, illustrators, actors, designers, editors, voice actors and narrators—if your job or practice has been hit. This is going to be a big one.

Would love for some audio engineers to sound off. A Juneau producer told me that five years ago it was $200 to master a track, two years ago it was $50, now it's $10. That's a helluva cut in pay, and makes it effectively impossible to opt out of using AI tools to skip the steps involved in mastering
Getting lots of stories of every kind here, some of them infuriating, some of them heartbreaking, some of them darkly funny. Keep them coming.

Did clients or bosses using AI change, degrade, or kill your job?

Artists, illustrators, animators, actors, designers, please share: [email protected]

I’m not asking for help or anything just looking to vent. But y’all it’s so demoralizing working like 70 hour+ weeks and still be completely unsure of how I’m going to pay bills this month. I feel like I work as hard as I can but this period of time really has me questioning if I should change

Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio had a budget of $35 million and every single character was moved one frame at a time by a human being. What the fuck are we even doing!!!!!!!
OpenAI confirms they're helping make an AI-generated movie called 'Critterz'

• Goal is to finish production in 9 months
• Budget is ~$30M
• Plan is to debut the film at Canne
• 'Paddington 3' writers penned the script

🔥 Warner Bros is suing Midjourney!🔥

They've cited mine and Gary's work like in the other suit, including that I was banned for criticizing the company.

This now means Midjourney is being sued by Warner Bros, Disney, Universal, and the class action from artists.

Let's gooo! 🔥

Really good read

Still a reality of animation, no matter if show is successful or not it rarely changes working conditions for artists.
Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki didn't start as the artists they became. Surviving the brutal world of TV anime in the '70s changed them and their style.

They made classics like Heidi and Anne of Green Gables and found their own paths, as we explore:

Wow!

So while I still wish this case would’ve gone to trial, and believe the amount given per work should have been EVEN higher, $1.5 billion in settlement AND the destruction of infringing datasets is still a fantastic start! Congratulations to all those involved as these things are not easy!

Not James Cameron, but once I spoke to someone at a party who worked at Weta and she said she and her team were working 120 hours a week for two months on the last Hobbit movie, and took turns sleeping for four hours on cots in the studio.
my brother worked in VFX for years for HBO and Netflix and so many of his friends in that field are having such a hard time finding work because of AI that they’re leaving the industry so Cameron can go fuck himself very much

Or maybe, and just hear me out here, the movie execs, producers, directors and “big name” actors are all massively overpaid. As opposed to the people who actually make the films…

I've seen an uptick in art and design tests essentially expecting an all-knowing all-skilled developer to land in their laps, resulting in people with incredible skills getting rejected because they just needed a little support in a single area.

We are EATING OURSELVES if we hire like this.
I don't get how people don't realize that a technology that replaces junior and entry level positions in a field destroys that field.

There's no skipping steps. You have to be a junior before you can be a senior, and if you don't have senior people, you don't have a field.
Remember, kids: A real big goal of "AI" is to entirely sever capital from labor, and no, there will be no universal basic income, you can all just starve and die, thanks

So new studies showcase that the more you know how GenAi works, the less likely you are to use it! 😌

This reminds me of ai advocates who claim that those who refuse to use GenAi do so because they dont know how it works, yet it’s the opposite!
The less you know the more you are likely to use GenAi
The Less You Know About AI, the More You Are Likely to Use It
AI can seem magical to those with low AI literacy, a new study finds. That, in turn, might make them more willing to try it.

More broadly, VFX bloat is at least 90% a result of poor planning, poor management , and execs/leads generallu treating artists and studios like a black box they email to receive infinite executions, revisions and costly minor variations around the clock and on demand
