Tech oligarchs have been scrambling for products to retain dominance since the plateau of the home computer and mobile phone. Today, they're forcing 'AI' garbage on us while pushing for mass surveillance and war products, even if they have to make the wars to service them. We can reject this future.

Maybe another way to think of it is as the "participation line" - the income one needs to fully participate in expected aspects of US life without worrying about plunging into deprivation one way or another

An investor called $140,000 the new poverty line. Experts disagreed but said he had a point.
Michael Green’s tally of the costs of raising a family in the U.S. today is going viral, even if some economists scoff at his math.

I really appreciate that @pbsnews.org ended the interview with this graphic.

It captures, in the simplest and starkest terms, the brutal arithmetic driving this country's homelessness catastrophe.

I underestimated how many of the books in stacks on the floor near the shelves, or double shelved, were signed. It is likely there will be signed book overflow.

I think it is incredibly disingenuous to act as if the justified criticisms of LLM's and GenAI are invalidated by totally different uses cases of machine learning.

Three evenings ago I read an article about using ice packs on the forehead to help beat insomnia. The original study was from 2011 IIRC. Apparently if you drop the temperature of your frontal lobe by a degree or so you trigger a cascade of sleepy time metabolic events.

They’re going to run “AI Trump,” an LLM programmed with everything he’s ever said and all the pictures ever taken of him, for president in 2028 and the SCOTUS ruling that makes this “legal” is going to inadvertently grant personhood to all the other LLMs.
Trump posts an image of him holding a sign that reads, “Trump 2028, yes!”

Guillermo Del Toro saw some audiences somehow didn't realize Oppenheimer was a movie about doing a bad thing, and out of the kindness of his heart, he made a Frankenstein movie just for them.

This is both offensive and intentional. If the ICE agents are "ignorant" they are willfully and deliberately ignorant. Their job is not to uphold the law but to terrorize non-white Americans in service to the white nationalist cause.

Indigenous actor Elaine Miles of "Northern Exposure" was detained by ICE at a Redmond bus stop. When she showed them her Tribal ID, they told her it was fake.

I'd seen mention elsewhere recently of how we measure the poverty line and it is wild: it's a measurement from the 1960s to be a crisis threshold.
We have a “poverty trap” and it’s driving the destruction of social cohesion.

The “poverty line” is’t 35,000, it’s $150,000, and making more than one, and less than the other is worse than being “poor”.

Which is why the rage.
