argentsunshine well you know what they say. when you've invested billions of dollars into hammers every problem looks like a nail and you keep handing these hammers to your users and they go "i don't really think i needed this hammer" and "but i don't have any nails that need hammering in right now" and "this is not a nail this is a glass vase that will break if i hit it with a hammer" and "didn't you used to have, like, other tools avaliable that might be better suited to this job" and you tell them to suck it up because you've replaced all your screwdrivers and wrenches and box cutters and crates and ladders and paint with hammers because your shareholders need to see an increase in value from your hammer investments

Chris nailed it with this part at the end. Games really are just gambling sims and toys to most people. Games as art is a nice concept, but the industry will always see games as a product. Horses threatened the money in a very prudish moment, and it had to suffer for it.
I cannot claim to know the minds of the people who shot down Horses, but the vagueness and hypocritical nature of their responses point to an unspoken rule: Art that is deemed a liability to business must be avoided without question. Gaming is often many things, but its status as gambling and toys take higher precedent than its ambition as an art form. How these decisions are made is arbitrary and capricious with supposedly immutable guidelines that can, somehow, change in a heartbeat for the right game.

I've always felt that one of the interesting things about Metroid's relationship to Alien is that Metroid uses a lot of labial/uterine/ovum sci-fi design language in contrast Alien's phallic/seminal sci-fi design language, and Prime 4 makes it more obvious than ever imo.

See the problem with multi-generational Heritage Foundation style political plots is that sometimes, several generations down the line, the people maintaining & upholding the scam have forgotten it's a scam and think it's the truth b/c all they've ever known in their lives is the scam
