Reminded that one reason "open source" was coined against "free/libre" was to exclude licenses barring use by Apartheid police in South Africa. That's what motivated the "no discrimination against fields of endeavor" clause in the OSI's definition.

The big push for state digital driver's licenses is effectively a movement to increase the power of government and big companies to control individuals.

Our leaders can't rush the adoption of digital licenses or our civil liberties will pay the price.

Or more Marxistly, AI critique reifies a political-economic movement as a technological force. This mystification helps naturalize the disruption of existing labor arrangements while directing critique away from the movement seeking to remake social relations through AI.

it's because we look at generative AI as a technology that does things, as the thing we need to fight, instead of focusing on the movement trying to remake the world using AI.
one thing I've been pondering this week is whether genAI is inherently an oligarchic project and—if so—why there isn't a stronger leftist movement against AI as a plan to take away jobs
The plan is to crash the economy to suppress wages.

The sign on Kristi Noem's podium reads "One of ours, all of yours." The reader will recall that this was a fascist rallying cry in the Spanish Civil War. What it means is that one of "our" people is worth all of "your" people.

I'm hearing about this in a few states. My big question is whether it is preparation for a crackdown on resistance to ICE operations, or a preemptive crackdown on anti war protesters after the planned invasion of Greenland
my friend is a postal worker in minneapolis and they all got letters at work today to show to police to prove they are essential workers authorized to be out. i guess we're to the "papers please" era now officially.

This is the same area in St. Paul where ice just rammed a driver and pulled them out of their vehicle on the street. Video of that is starting to make it into the public

I really cannot stress, even if someone who has done this academically for years now how fast this is accelerating

Too many people are trying to differentiate between ICE and police.

I will hold your hand as I say this:

Police in the US treat marginalized people the way ICE treats everyone. They're far more similar than you want to admit.

Defunding the police and abolishing ICE are the same fight.

I think it’s important to point out: ICE does NOT have the same authority as a police officer. They do NOT have the power to enforce laws, only to engage in their specific tasks.

IE: they don’t do traffic, etc. impeding traffic is not a penalty ICE can enforce against

A big reason Americans can’t save themselves is that they refuse to know they’re in danger. They go wah! I’m tired of being depressed by alerts to the dangerous state of the country & world. It affects my bougie idea of what mental health is. They go what a shame if what’s really happening happened.

The people who are not moved by children being massacred in school shootings because of the policies they support will not be moved by a white mother being killed by authorities either. That’s effortless for them.
