If the Lincoln assassins had followed through and killed Johnson as well, acting President Lafayette Foster would have Let a caretaker government until General Grant could be seated as President 3 years early.
Thinking about how under the original presidential succession if there was a double barrel vacancy there'd be a special election in 90 days

they're doing it for gender, imo
It’s genuinely wild that the United States spent decades building an elaborate rules-based international order which de facto cemented its permanent status as the dominant global hegemon, sustained by ideology rather than might, and now is just blowing it all up for literally no reason

For all the complaints about the West Wing you see on the left, there is no group who believes in the same fiction that saying the right words can make the difference. That if Democrats just say the magic words smaller numbers will become bigger. The voters chose this!

This analogy is insane because "We" didn't "hire" the Democrats, "we", the electorate put the Republicans in charge. A more accurate analogy would be getting mad at exterminators you didn't hire to deal with the roaches allowed to take over the house.
the reason people sometimes act madder at democrats than republicans when republicans do impossibly evil shit is the same reason why, if you hired an exterminator to handle a roach infestation and he showed up to feed and play with them instead, your first instinct wouldn’t be to yell at the roaches

Hillary 2016 & Kamala 2024 were the most progressive platforms most voters had seen in their lifetimes. That voters rejected them does not frustrate me half as much as how few of them realized what they were rejecting, & still don't. Even educated, well-read people with zero excuse.
Here is the thing! This is what Harris promised in 2024! That was her campaign message. Everyone has completely memory-holed the 2024 campaign. www.cnn.com/2024/09/18/p...

I feel like the reoccurring complaint of dropped plot threads and "plot holes", a term that has been overextended to the point of meaningless, with the Stranger Things finale it looks like audiences haven't changed much since the LOST days. A show focusing on its characters is good actually.

It’s pretty crazy that Cindy McCain got appointed to the World Food Program and has since done genuine advocacy for Palestinians in Gaza while her useless daughter is always saying shit like “if my father were alive today he would say the 14 words.”

Again, Pelosi personally did half of all presidential impeachments in American history
Pelosi herself has been more responsibility for the growth of elite impunity culture than any other top Dem. She seems to regard the imposition of consequences on politicians as intolerably risky for the people doing the imposing, and consistently acted in ways to prevent it from happening.

a lot of people don't realize that Christmas carols and traditions are actually folk memories of suppressed pre-Christian events, namely the end of the Third Age and the Fall of Sauron.

not that the present economic picture is rosy, but i do think that popular culture — and specifically nostalgia bait television — is a big part of the reason that our public memory of the 1970s, 1980s and even 1990s seems to miss the real economic pain that marked each of those decades.

When my wife and I first started living together we had a conversation about which chores bother each of us the least and we divvyed up those chores accordingly so they get done in a reasonable amount of time without too much aggravation. I don't mind dishes, she doesn't mind laundry. Both get done.
i don't think this is correct as a whole even by its own logic, but i think it's a good illustration of how one way you work on a marriage, or any other relationship, is to try to minimize salience of things that cause recurring conflict rather than necessarily try to "solve" the conflict.
Did red states ban dishwashers? This reads like a martial strife column from 1969.

i think to understand the meaning of the birthright citizenship clause to the framers of the 14th amendment, you have to understand significance of dred scott to the civil war republican party. dred scott wasn't just a bad ruling, it was understood as a rejection of the declaration itself.

This has been a tragedy for me personally as I wanted to check the 1882 elections after watching Death by Lightning and cannot access anything because I stupidly never made an account.
For quite some time, some awful person or group has been trying to sabotage OurCampaigns through "distributed denial-of-service" attacks. It's an essential resource for anyone who follows or covers elections.

It’s wrong to lump all top Trump people in one category. There are differences among them. But they do seem to fall into three (sometimes overlapping) categories:

• Ordinary criminals (grift and corruption).

• Sex criminals.

• War criminals.

What they said about Harris never was about being opposed to wars.

It was about being opposed to a woman commanding them and defending our allies and classical liberal values.

They never opposed following Donald Trump to commit plunder, rape, and murder for fun.
