the HORSES affair is a startlingly low bar to cross to see if people actually care about protecting games from censorship of upsetting themes because it's far tamer and has way more moral clarity than a lot of stuff that doesn't get banned. but it's also very clarifying to see who can't cross it

Ultimately this controversy boils down into three problems:
1) People who haven't played it making assumptions about what's in it.
2) Despite what they might say, people don't actually think video games are art.
3) There are only like six places you can sell video games online.

What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

A thing about that Horses blacklist is that you may find the scene they cut and replaced distasteful but we're literally setting a bar here that the TV show South Park couldn't clear.

the breadth of what we get now ui/presentation-wise is so rad and interesting in a way that we did not get back then because publishing a game was like 100000x harder. we're feastin' better than ever (imo!) but the stuff at the top is without a doubt full of capitalist slop rot

“lazy use of unwrap blew up a process and took out the internet” bzzt. wrong. judicious use of unwrap blew up a process instead of allowing an Extremely Named CVE to happen and spraying your bank account credentials all over the public internet
People want a technical solution to what is ultimately a judgement problem.

People know that unwrap can cause a panic. That's the choice that's being made when you unwrap. Changing the name won't change that.

the way nintendo gets about women in their games is so funny in how, like, specific the way they are. it's not an outright loathing, it's like having to watch a 70s action super team anime do the extremely out of touch focus episode on the one lady in the cast. and kept doing that episode into 2025

The problem with people increasingly using "puzzle game" to super-expansively mean any game that might require thinking is that it's not a very useful term when you start lumping Stephen's Sausage Roll, sudoku, Myst, and Epigraph under the same umbrella.
