what really bugs me about the "trans people got ahead of public opinion" line is that it ignores *why* public opinion changed. it didn't just come out of nowhere, there was a deliberate push to make trans rights a wedge issue.
Just started doing new data analysis and I know I keep saying this, but: I really, really don't think people appreciate how much this moral panic was a deliberate and extremely expensive invention.

Fwiw several people whose grandparents fled the holocaust to come to the USA made this exact comparison to me in Minnesota last week, saying this was what their grandparents told them about. The difference is that people in Minnesota have their neighbors’ backs.
