we are living thorough 10 years of moral collapse. it’s happening everywhere but is concentrated in the US. we have given up on even trying to argue that there must be more to life, both individually and collectively, than bare materialism and power. we must rededicate ourselves to meaningful life.

The “AI” has not read the book. Even if the book was in its training data, it has just absorbed it as a set of statistics. It will juggle you a “summary” that might or might not relate to the conclusions of the actual text. The only way you’ll know is to read it yourself.
This is one of the reasons I remain horrified by seeing @historians.org suggest "ways to use gAI" that included this:

Americans & Europeans needlessly exposing African babies to preventable diseases just to see if they can find something that would justify their preexisting antivaccine beliefs is not only unscientific and actually anti-science, it is very much reminiscent of colonialist, racist human rights abuses
“It is not clear what the research question is. It seems to be about the safety of the vaccine rather than its effectiveness, but both are already well-established, and to undertake such a study in a population where almost 1/5 of the adult population has a marker of infection seems extremely risky”

What's so striking about this, too, is that comedy is based on left turns and surprises! AI is fed shit that's been already written. Comedy is like discovery or scientific advancement. AI cannot create those left turns and surprises. It'll write jokes based on concepts that already exist.
The great old comedy writer Larry Gelbart said that your style is formed by what you can’t do. I wish more people understood that. That and the Martha Graham quote about keeping the channel open.

Consumer-facing “A.i.” is a fascist project of right wing billionaires to replace actual knowledge and human interaction with lies, disinformation, slop, and propaganda.
Academics and technologists are sounding the alarm about a growing crisis in scholarship as we know it: AI-generated citations of nonexistent papers that have infested real journals. Despite being fake, the sources are widely assumed to be authentic the more they appear in published literature.
AI Is Inventing Academic Papers That Don't Exist -- And They're Being Cited in Real Journals
Academic articles from authors using large language model are creating an ecosystem of fake research that threatens human knowledge itself.

It is utterly catastrophic that RFK Jr. plans to end CDC recommendations for most childhood vaccines.

It’s a betrayal of science, ethics, compassion, and the people of the United States.

And it was also a specific goal of Project 2025 (page 254).

It's crazy how people will tell chatgpt to make them a picture of Spock, have it spit something out that only vaaaguely reminds you of Spock, and say "good enough." It failed at the one thing you wanted it to do!! And there are a thousand actual, real pictures of Spock! Y'know, from his TV show??

We do not have to offer and I believe indeed should not offer any benefit of the doubt: Anything sold as "AI" should be presumed ineffective, exploitative, environmentally ruinous, bigotry-amplifying and otherwise until proven otherwise.

I somehow missed this part. Former NFL players are *ending their lives* due to the nightmarish effects of repeated brain trauma and Puka's out here saying concussions are fake. Truly astounding ignorance.
something his apology did not contain: anything about this insane thing about concussions!

I'm told that HHS has just terminated all funding agreements with the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Here's a letter HHS sent canceling one of the grants, relating to work on birth defects. Canceled because the project "emphasizes equity, diversity, and inclusion as key foundational components"

The media needs to stop writing headlines like “The CDC changes course on vaccines and autism” and “The CDC defends measles response”.

NONE of this is coming from legitimate scientists at the CDC.

ALL of it is coming from RFK Jr.

Every such headline is causing further harm to public health.

This is such CEO Brain bullshit, from a class that is so morbidly afraid of missing The Next Big Thing that they all end up like ants in a death loop because as soon as someone starts chasing a trend, the rest mindlessly follow, no matter how glaringly, obviously bad the trend is.

In my case, this painstaking labor in the process through which the science gets done. Science isn't measuring stuff in a lab. It's thinking deeply, extracting the heart of idea from the soup of thoughts running through my mind, molding it, and finding a way to communicate that idea to others.

Guys like Mark Cuban cannot comprehend a distinction between "art" and "content," and see the value of content in its capacity to generate revenue (which these days usually means clicks)

Whether 'Zarya of the Dawn' is or isn't art does not matter to Cuban at all

Brutal but effective public health messaging from New York Public Health.

The CDC is compromised. They’re no longer a reliable source of information.

They push anti-vaxx & anti-science grift.

Get your vaccines. Wear a respirator. Clean the air

Get public health advice from experts, not RFK Jr

LLM's inherently lack teleological thinking. They output the statistically most probable next thing.

Without teleological thinking, making coffee would become a chaotic blur of activity that only has a chance of resulting in a pot of fresh coffee.

This entire grift relies on convincing people that they don't know how to do the things they have always known how to do, and ironically, if it works, we will, in a very short amount of time, forget how to do all the things we have always known how to do.
