this feels like vintage internet. just discovered a wordpress blog called "Pre-Digital Railfan - Train Watching In The Age of Kodachrome". It is full of incredible slides of vintage trains, shot by PNW native Lindsay Korst (including this shot). it's so good, go check it out pdrailfan1.wordpress.com

A lot of times I'll do this thing where I'll completely neglect to share huge chunks of an idea or an argument because I've never had to contend with anyone outside my head needing context for that idea. This happens constantly and makes me insufferable and confusing.

I need to socialize more.

"we USE ai, but our game wont CONTAIN it" is a clarification that no one has ever cared about & now CEOs are using it as a wedge to get their foot in the door as a part of a long term plan into normalizing AI, just like how 'it's just placeholder' was used with E33. dont cede even an inch of ground

In general, AI adoption levels are a measurement of to what extent a particular reward system (a corporation, a market, academia as a whole system) has ceased to distinguish between doing a thing and pretending to do a thing
One of many things the pro-AI crowd doesn't seem to understand is the very important distinction between academic scholarship and the production of papers. Of course they can be related but they're not necessarily the same thing

The problem with the Twitter format is that it's good for posting shit like "just ate a sandwich. #winningatlife" but it ends up being used to argue about complicated things that can't be addressed effectively in the given text space, which makes doing so a pain in the ass

People can "America could be good it's aspirational" all they want but you need at a certain point to acknowledge, without qualification, that it is and always has been a white supremacist project born of a postcolonialism that saw the problem as the people cracking the whip
The unrealized promise of America is good, actually, and we should fight for it
i have been thinking a bit about how any political program that requires the premise of “america bad” is a dead end

great job whipping votes @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social you useless sack of shit. without three Dem defectors this doesn't pass, and now every American family with a trans kid gets to sleep worse worrying about this going to the Senate.
Breaking: House Republicans pass Marjorie Taylor Greene's bill to criminalize doctors that provide gender-affirming care for trans kids. Her bill imposes jail time penalties up to 10 years. Now, it's headed to the Senate where it is not likely to advance as it would need 7 Democrats to sign on

"This world is infected with political views" says gamer foaming at the mouth over a cute game containing characters that represent over a quarter of the world's population.

If you can, start looking for better ways to support game devs. Valve is a terrible company.
Valve has now rejected my complaint, confirming that "I don't like muslims" is a valid reason to leave a negative review on a game on Steam

This is where we're at now.

this dovetails into larger discussions about the inherent artistic restraints of AAA and any kind of mass-market media, and if there is something beyond use of AI we need to be interrogating more deeply. long before generative AI people were critiquing AAA for being blandly repetitive and formulaic
if AI is a hardline no for you, as it is for many of us, you gotta start getting into truly independent shit or simply accept the slop. i don't think AI is "inevitable" but i do think the tech-adjacent games industry is currently and in the near future saturated with it

To make my stance absolutely explicitly clear: anyone who thinks that the US has any business invading, embargoing, coercing, or otherwise fucking with the politics and security of any Latin American country, should walk into traffic.
December 17, 2025 at 9:09 AM
What's wild about the Venezuela/Colombia thing is that they think they have a 9/11 to half-assedly blame on them to justify murdering a bunch of people and invading and they don't even have that. They've done literally nothing and basically nothing has actually happened.

"I'm hoping this doesn't happen" is not a great position to be in, if I'm being entirely honest. Hard to feel good about it.
Gallego: "This is the Iraq War 2.0 with a South American flavor. I'm hoping this doesn't happen, but I'm telling you - if you look at what they have down there, all the assets they have down there, all the actions they're taking, this is absolutely an effort to get us involved in a war in Venezuela"

I really think that more of a distinction needs to be made between doomerism and revolutionary politics. Both see the US government as beyond recovery, but where one is pathetic nihilism, the other is a stance that's actually *very* eager for the possibilities that fact opens up.

There's something simultaneously pathetic and genuinely tragic about Tumblr's slow but inexorable march towards death. I have a lot of nostalgia for it and attachment to it, and the feature blend allowed a lot of unique communities to flourish within it. But it just feels like a husk now.
