this was also consensus opinion for center-right types after george floyd’s murder five years ago. the state media apparatus will be working overtime the next few weeks to reprogram them
Really worth watching this interview with a bystander who witnessed the ICE shooting in Minneapolis: "I'm pretty right-leaning. But seeing this, this is not how we're supposed to be doing things in America.”

Compare and contrast how the media covered the Minnesota daycare story to how they covered the estimated $64B of fraud in Trump's PPP program
That whole “Minnesota fraud” scandal is a completely made up racist lie and the media is eating it up and presenting it as if it’s a genuine scandal. I’m going to lose my mind

yep. i can identify any number of structural issues but at the end of the day the basic problem is the republican party. this has been apparent for at least 20 years. it is also an incredibly unpopular observation to make among “serious” people.
Right.

If you want a good explanation of why the American system of government worked well enough for 200 years and then suddenly stopped, it's because Republicans in Congress suddenly started letting their partisan interests COMPLETELY override their institutional interests
a lot of problems wouldn't exist if we had a congress with even an ounce of self interest

absolutely bizarre to see a violent, rogue american regime, which is threatening military attacks on a bunch of major trading partners and close allies, and openly fantasizing about hitler-style wars of territorial conquest, covered in the tone of horse-race political commentary

“Well… we can’t just keep filing impeachment articles all the time.”

Yes you can! If the man is committing impeachable offenses on the regular, you’re acquiescing to a standard that raises the bar for impeachable offense to absurd levels.
How are voters meant to understand how serious things are if in lieu of shouting fire AND going into building with hoses, you're simply posting fire safety suggestions on social media?
Not introducing articles of impeachment is a message that Trump hasn't committed impeachable offenses.

Even among nominally liberal reporters, I think there's still a virtually ironclad assumption that someone as irrational and impaired as Trump could not possibly ascend to the presidency, and that there must, therefore, be some kind of coherent intelligence behind what he says and does.
This is the wild part about the whole Trump experience, even when he says politically disastrous things, reporters rush in to fill in the blanks and steelman his arguments. As soon as they cut away from him saying “we’ll run it,” they cut to someone saying “obviously he didn't mean that.”

you simply do not have to preface your statements about this with “but Maduro sucks”

whether or not Maduro sucks is entirely beside the point - we invaded another country and grabbed their leader with no justification other than “we wanted to”

don’t give them cover on it

A US indictment doesn’t give you the right to invade another country, seize its leader, or decide who governs next. Criminal charges and non-recognition don’t erase head-of-state immunity, this is regime change dressed up as law enforcement.

Enough quibbling about congressional authorization and proper process. Democrats should stand on the principle of the thing: no war with Venezuela, no regime change, no "nation-building," no Iraq 2.0. We've been down this road before, and we know it ends badly for us and for ordinary Venezuelans.

Most of all, I'd just like to get clarity from our legislators just why they're all such worthless fucking morons, I suspect that they might have some insight into that question in particular.
Maybe we can invite our Congressmen!

And over some pancakes or breakfast sandwiches, we can ask our Senators, like Angus King, why they decided to fund this government

We could even ask whether we still have a legislature, or if instead we have, as I suspect, a DC social club for septuagenarians!
All right, woke up to Maduro being kidnapped, guess I'll catch you guys tomorrow when we wake up to the occupation of Panama.

Would you like to get breakfast, after we wake up to the seizure of Greenland next week? I could also be available after we wake up to the invasion of Mexico, or Canada.
