This is sadly my experience. Folks don't want to spend the effort it takes to manage democracy.
Most people demand a system where they don't have to engage in politics at all apart from snorting about "those clowns in congress". They don't want democracy in a real sense; they want elite rule which they don't have to pay attention to because the elites set up guardrails.

The more concrete, direct, practical actions you can take to affect even one tiny corner of the situation, the more you reduce the impact of moral injury on yourself overall. There's a very, VERY good reason I spend so much time/effort on anti-state-internet-censorship lawsuits!
