DREAMS FROM THE MOUNTAIN

Bill hates these drives.

He misses big city cults with all the accompanying comforts of civilization. The beauty of these mountains is lost entirely on him because his eyes are glued to the treacherous roads that will kill you if you stop respecting them for even a moment.

I was at a discount store today and I saw a book by Greg Gutfeld called "The King of Late Night" (2.99) and I was like "Oh cool he must have done a biography of Carson or Arsenio or Conan or something" and then read the back and realized it was about him and I had to hold back a massive laugh.

The GOP nominee in a Virginia state House race this fall has dropped out. He says he lost his government contracting job and has no income, so he's had to take a job out of state & move away.

That's... literally what Dems are campaigning on to win VA. www.princewilliamtimes.com/news/gop-nom...

You can actually watch Theil talk about his ideology in depth on older podcasts, he believes the nation needs to be put through a massive economic upheaval on the level of the Great Depression but this time to have it swing the other way towards technocratic fascism. Him and Andreeson are explicit
I do wonder if Thiel is going to argue that the GOP (and Trump more specifically) serves the role of "katcheon" - the restrainer of the apocalypse he sees progressive liberal culture bringing to the world
Today, JD Vance urged Republicans to put on the "full armor of god" to fight their opponents.

Tonight, some of the most powerful people in tech will gather to hear Peter Thiel—who created Vance—give a secret lecture on the Antichrist.

It's all the same talking point, folks: politics as holy war

kind of unreal watching JD Vance host the charlie kirk show. there’s long been complete unity between the right and their media propaganda apparatus, of which kirk was a massive player in, but then ending the show by telling that audience to thought police fellow americans is psychotic

A lot has changed since I hurriedly recorded this back in February, most notably Elon's departure from the Trump administration, but the underlying material conditions that make this strategy possible are all basically unchanged.

Hate Elon? Go after his money. Here's how:

the reason you keep seeing the same names in major Trump administration failure before the courts -- the reason Emil Bove did everything -- is that they have entirely destroyed the DOJ. they don't have enough guys.
a major issue for them is they don’t have enough attorneys willing to prosecute these cases
Maybe I’m naive, but this government hasn’t even meaningfully gone after the genuinely unpopular groups they could call domestic terrorists—PSL, In Our Lifetime—I’m not terribly confident they’re going to be successful going after National Organization for Women or whatever

It is a pretty shocking that near-complete energy independence through home solar+storage is inching towards viability. If you're an eccentric affluent person you could probably afford to pay $200k right now and live a normal middle class life off-grid
How big a solar battery do I need to store *all* my home's electricity?
I have a modest set of solar panels on an entirely ordinary house in suburban London. On average they generate about 3,800kWh per year. We also use about 3,800kWh of electricity each year. Obviously,...

Has there been a study on methods of meeting in the last 5ish years and rates of success?

I have zero experience in online dating but like I cannot imagine it being more successful for any individual long term than just meeting people because vibes online are not vibes offline.
The idea that the majority of new couples are meeting on apps is incomprehensible to me. I've usually found it vastly easier to meet people in person.

Our system values land more than people irt representation, and in 2020 the dem voters made a faustian bargain realizing Joe Biden was 100% too old to run already, let alone 2024, hoping that the leaked 'one term president' rumors were real because they're collectively idiots.
This confuses me. If the combined share of liberals is larger than the combined share of conservatives, why are we here?
i'm so fascinated by the growth of liberal women along with the slight tick up with conservative men

notice how no one who actually likes charlie kirk quotes anything he’s ever said
In his closing remarks while hosting Charlie Kirk's show for the White House, Vance says "the most important truth Charlie told was" — and then recites Apostles' Creed.

Vance then spends several minutes railing against the left in a speech that, uh, I think is likely gonna get some attention.
