If you see your favourite indies, especially those who are wide or avoid Amazon, raise their prices... We all just had two emails in less than 24h:

- Smashwords is cutting down its royalty rates, especially at lower price points
- Ingramspark is raising most of its printing costs again

If you'd like some good news on AI, the last few weeks have seen execs across multiple industries strive to hide AI usage labeling on their products because, as many of us have said FOR YEARS, the audience that *doesn't* want AI is substantial and we will reject your product whole hog for using it.

Here's an idea: rather than burning a trillion on AI, why don't we spend it on teen scientists instead, since they apparently deliver faster than the machine?

Eleven years ago, I wrote to Tom Stoppard to ask about this coup de théâtre from 1949. It took me down an unexpected rabbit hole - in memory of Stoppard, here's what I found.

Once Upon a Time in Space is an upper-MG collection of 4 classic fairy tales (Snow White, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, The Snow Maiden) adapted as sci-fi tales. Most have queer representation. Check it out. :)

do as Ana says here and tell them your bank told you to contact THEM. easy way to tack on more time in the call

Thread.

Also, I never felt more gaslighted than when management at my last job kept saying metrics pointed to AI increasing efficiency without any cost to quality, as more and more of the job became solving robot hallucinations instead of actually working.
Why don't we like "AI?"

You try to put it into everything in nonsensical ways.
It doesn't work the way you claim it will.
You don't pay for the work you use to generate it.
Your intent is labor reduction without a contributory return.
You know it's unpopular so you try to hide it.
You lie about it.

The CEO of ChatGPT is blaming a teen’s suicide on his failure to follow the terms of service:

Adam Raine, 16, told ChatGPT he was suicidal and the AI bot told him his feelings were valid and even provided suggestions and detailed instructions.
OpenAI says teen's 'misuse' of ChatGPT is to blame for his suicide, because he broke the TOU: 'Users must comply with OpenAI's Usage Policies, which prohibit the use of ChatGPT for suicide or self-har...
The lawyer presenting Adam Raine's family calls the response "disturbing" and I have to agree.

For like the zillionth time: Libraries are FREE for you, but WE still get compensated for our work!!
Just saw someone claim that authors who want to be paid for their work are "class traitors" because we "only let the wealthy" read our books, and I think I need to go into the woods to scream into the night for a bit.

It's $5, not your first-born child! I need that $5 for health insurance!

I come from working-class folk. I work a rotating set of freelance jobs, writing books among them. 75+ hour weeks, send myself on book tours on my own struggling dime, arrange all care for non-driving disabled partner & if I were to calculate my hourly wage I'd have to call a labor union on myself.
Honestly, people calling creators the "petite bourgeoisie" makes me want to snap.

We're working folk. And we work really hard. For next to nothing.

We're not lounging around eating bonbons. We're trying to figure out how we're going to be able to pay rent next month.

Pirating is sending the message that a thing is so vital that you cannot possibly survive without the thing. That you would resort to stealing just to have the thing. If the art was of poor quality for the price demanded, you would just stop engaging with it. You'd seek art elsewhere.

Too many people see pirating as a form of protest. And it's not. At all. Boycotting is a form of protest. If I ran up in Target and started stealing things, that's not sending a message about Target's practices.
Stop making up reasons why pirating comics is good. It’s not good. Spend a few dollars and buy a book. Quit being a fuckin parasite
