I just taught my lecture course on mid-20th c US history, which starts with Harding and concludes with Nixon.

For the first time, I had to pause and stress that those scandals were actually shocking at the time and, what’s more, that Americans actually demanded people be held accountable.
All of the money that changed hands in the Teapot Dome scandal totaled less than $10 million after adjusting for inflation, and it was considered so corrupt we still teach it in high school government classes a century later.
Corruption so pungent, it wafts right off the page:

Lobbyists who do pardon deals “say their going rate is $1 million. Pardon-seekers have offered some lobbyists close to the president success fees of as much as $6 million if they can close the deal.”

Immigration. You thought it only caused literally everything bad in the history of the world *except* nuclear war.

But extremist politicians do not think you're afraid enough yet.

So they are here to clarify: Immigrants also cause nuclear war.

Until Trump began conspiracies about mail voting, Republicans were fully on board with GRACE PERIODS for ballots to arrive as long as postmarked by Election Day. They passed it overwhelmingly in KS, OH, & elsewhere.

But now Trump hates it.

So 4 red states—KS, OH, ND, UT—all banned it this year.

Ohio is the fourth GOP-run state this year to ban ballots that are postmarked by Election Day but arrive after. A Supreme Court case could force that policy nationwide next year.

Trump says the Epstein Files are a Democrat hoax, but only Democrats were guilty of crimes with Epstein.

He says the DOJ should stop releasing files and everyone should stop talking about it, but also the DOJ should charge Democrats with crimes.

This is how you talk when you’re guilty as hell.

Even if you trust the Trump administration to be a fair and neutral arbiter of what is "anti-American" sentiment, this is a significant departure from the idea that critical speech should not be subject to government punishment.

It’s pretty wild that the most rabidly anti-immigrant administration in recent memory is comprised of a President married to an immigrant, a VP married to the daughter of immigrants, an assistant AG in charge of Civil Rights who’s an immigrant (Dhillon), & it was all funded by an immigrant (Musk).

Watched and experienced this at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in the early 1990s. Historians forced out first. And ethicists. The SBC saw their removal as paramount to saving the denomination. The problem is too few on the other side saw the real existential threat until too late.
Important to also consider that many white Christian conservatives experience the challenge of academic history to their worldviews to be existential, which is a lot different from the centrists & liberals who think what's happening in Higher Ed to be along the lines of normal institutional shifts.
