Watched Gremlins and Goonies yesterday and it made me nostalgic not for the 80s but for pop culture where bankers, yuppies, and capitalist greed were the enemies
Doing our annual watch of the anti-capitalist classic Scrooged. I saw it in the theater as a kid and I could never understand how people didn't change their approach to life afterwards. Capitalism is very resilient.

It's worth remembering you aren't immune to propaganda either and if you're on twitter for any length of time that's a platform designed to make you think right ring views are far more normal and popular than they are
currently at record-high search interest for canceling disney plus. pulling kimmel is a bigger deal to the company's bottom line than any of the "woke" scandals of the past 5 years. i think news & entertainment corp execs need put more work into understanding their audience, & get off twitter

Unwinding the AI BS from our government services is going to be a nightmare, and it's the kind of thing we may just let fester because it will be to hard to fix. A lot of evil people are probably making some money though.
New: HHS has told all employees that they should start using ChatGPT, continuing the administration's AI-ification of everything, its trust in tools that hallucinate, and the general sense that getting things right is not important or worth trying to do:

Very cool how we have literally in the last few years restructured our entire economy around this technology that is being rapidly abandoned by everyone involved. Really bodes well.
The OpenAI employee share sale at the BS $500bn number is now up to $10.3 billion. This is a cashout. This is the thing you do when you do not see a future for the company.

Because they don't see them as hobbies through the process of which joy is created, they see them as arduous processes which rewards one with goods, acclaim, and success at the end. They're not trying to acquire a new hobby, they're trying to optimize the time and labor out of a productive process.
Why are so many AI people trying to get into hobbies they absolutely despise? "Fuck reading just give me the summary", Fuck art just make it for me", "I got ideas but fuck actually writing" like??? Maybe just find something you enjoy doing and do that?????

LLM transcription decided that when I said Oregon State University that I really meant University of Oregon. That's a helluva an error, but not nearly as dire as messing up anything related to THE Ohio State University. They will end you.

Have any prominent elected Dems committed to dismantling ICE if/when they reclaim power? Because that frankly seems like an absolute bare minimum at this point. You can't just have a massively funded armed gang of hard-right stormtroopers embedded across the country & return to normal.

this makes me suspect that one of the routes that AI companies are aiming at is targeting young people. anything that existed when you were a kid feels normal and indispensable. especially if you always used AI to write all your essays for you. and to comfort you when your parents were arguing.

Still remember one study where they had "AI" look at photos to diagnose cancer and it had like a 98% or 99% accuracy...

...except all the photos of actual tumors had a ruler next to them for scale. And the algorithm just got really good at spotting rulers in a photograph.
Stop offloading cognitive tasks to "generative AI." Stop using systems w/ "AI" features either inextricably woven through them or prominently displayed at the top to nudge you into their use. Stop *Designing* "AI" tools & integrations that way. Stop building or using "AI" like this. Fucking Stop it.

Update: I offered the amendment. Not to refuse acceptance of the Qatari jet; just to prohibit Trump from taking it with him when he leaves office - after the taxpayers spend $1 billion to retrofit it.

Failed 14-15. Every single Republican voted to allow Trump to take the jet.
The fight against corruption has to be ceaseless.

Today in the Appropriations Committee, I will offer an amendment to prohibit the Qatari jet that was gifted to Trump (which is going to cost taxpayers $1 billion) from being transferred to him personally.

Stay tuned.
