Kristi Noem is a stone-cold liar who has zero credibility.

There is nothing to suggest the shooting of an unarmed woman in Minneapolis was justified.

This heinous killing must be criminally investigated to the full extent of the law.

frame by frame.

first frame: he draws his gun (we can see his position, he could simply step out of the way and doesn't)

second frame: first shot, you can CLEARLY SEE HIS FEET AND HE IS BESIDE THE CAR AND NOT IN FRONT OF IT

third frame: positioning shots 2+3

Just heard an AI ethicist talk about how important it is that we say ‘MEN are using Grok to undress images of babies, children and women’ not ‘Grok is….’. Grok isn’t responsible for the action, the men enabling & using it for this repulsive purpose are. Small but important bit of linguistic accuracy

The American people electing Trump after he staged a coup attempt 5 years ago was a nail in the coffin of our democracy. You can rationalize it all you want - But inflation! But wokeness! - but ultimately it was a societal suicide attempt and probably the dumbest collective voting decision ever made

The coalition of the willing is spending too much time on hypothetical postwar scenarios and not enough on pressuring Russia to actually end its war on Ukraine.

Without that pressure, the war will continue and postwar plans will be worthless

Their messaging is so fucking incoherent. Maduro was an illegitimate leader who lost in 2024, which is why we're replacing him with his VP instead of the person who won in 2024. We did this to stop fentanyl, which is why he's indicted for cocaine.

We're also occupying Venezuela via Zoom call.

We are now in an era of unrestrained power politics. The rules-based international order is dead. Smaller countries need to form strong alliances to resist large, predatory nations, of which the US now counts as one. Reintegrating with the EU should be an urgent UK national security priority.

hi, tank expert here! this is not funny, tanks only do this when they’re in extreme distress.
Russia has begun deploying tanks topped with... shipping containers?

I'll say it again: if any other ethnic or religious minority said "please don't use this particular term or chant, you might not have bad intentions but it is deeply racist and threatening to us", the reaction would be mortified apology.

And that's without a mass terror event four days ago

Ahmed al Ahmed, the man who tackled one of the Bondi killers, became an Australian citizen 3 years ago.

His deed was "his way of conveying his gratitude for staying in Australia, for being granted citizenship."

He took 5 bullets, and fears he'll lose his left arm.

“Al Ahmed’s parents – who had themselves arrived in Australia just months ago, an example of the kind of “chain migration” right wingers so often decry – explained their son’s motivations. He couldn’t stand to do nothing as he saw people suffering, and did what he could to stop it, they said.”

apart from the sheer inconceivable horror of the El Fasher massacre and its attendant horrors itself, the thing I'm feeling depressed about is that it probably won't matter.

these were people already on the utmost margins of the global system, who the world has already decided it doesn't care about
60,000 is the *low end* estimate.
So, El Fasher looks like one of the worst single event atrocities to happen this century so far, but the evidence has come in such a trickle it seems to only now be getting verified

This is a really appalling editorial error on BBC Question Time

"Apparently one in three children don't speak English as a first language, why does this matter?"

Chair says "have English as a second language"

Caption changes the meaning entirely
"Don't speak fluent English"

I can’t help thinking that when, in future, people ask what UK political leaders said as it became undeniable that US saw European liberal democracy as its no1 strategic foe, Starmer and others will regret that the answer is “not much, shuffled awkwardly, looked at their feet”.

Interesting that the BBC will call National Rally "Far Right" (in an article about Bardella meeting Farage) - when they would never use that term for Reform. Their policies are very similar. If anything Reform's are more authoritarian.

This is accurate. Russia has succeeded very well in convincing media in Europe and the UK that the conflict is far more one-sided in Russia’s favour than is genuinely the case - and that contributes to the assumption that it should be settled in Russia’s favour sooner rather than later.
One of the frustrating aspects of Trump's 'peace' efforts is that he resides in an echo chamber that doesn't acknowledge the real difficulties that Russia is facing in continuing its war in Ukraine - and it is an echo chamber that influences media coverage, judging by the questions that I get asked!
Time is not working for Russia, and things will only get worse.

“Putin is very likely preparing to attempt to offset Russia’s near-exhaustion of voluntary recruitment in 2026 by mobilizing elements of Russia’s strategic reserve to sustain combat operations in Ukraine.”

As we in Europe sit around waiting to see what mad nonsense Trump comes up with next for Ukraine, I find it hard to take the handwringing seriously. We made a choice in 2014 not to respond to the very obvious aggression and retain our faith in America always being on our side.
