Today at The Reveal: The latest entry in my '80s in 40 column looks at FOOTLOOSE (and, briefly, CHILDREN OF THE CORN), an old-fashioned movie that nonetheless attempts to make a case against turning back the clock—with dance!
The ‘80s in 40: ‘Footloose’ (February, 1984)
A rebellious Kevin Bacon teaches a small town the value of dancing in an old-fashioned movie that nonetheless pushes back at attempts to turn back the clock.

All of the UK is pretending that the UK secretly passed the equality act in 2010 that required a national bathroom ban along with a full ban of trans people from society and it was only discovered fifteen years later. It's obscene.

Can I just fucking say, imagine if any of these people ever faced any kind of fucking consequence for just blurting out bullshit like this
“In a decade, Pichai said that it'll be normal to build extraterrestrial data centers”.

And he’s definitely not the only one speaking about the *necessity* of data centers in space. Apparently the planet is not big enough for their scaling “laws”.

Sundar Pichai says Google will start building data centers in space, powered by the sun, in 2027
Google announced Project Suncatcher earlier this month. CEO Sundar Pichai now says it could begin building data centers in space as soon as 2027.

This is brilliant analysis. The main takeaway is that Labour strategists do not understand why they won the 2024 election or who voted for the party. The leak leftwards was well underway before the country went to the polls. A major wake-up is required. I won't bet on it happening.
New post just out:

Six lessons from the 2024 election.

And what they mean for the next one.

Covering: Labour's fatal misunderstanding about why they won; effects of a more fragmented system; changes in media/polling.

Part of me absolutely loves this list. Like fuck it, Quentin. Just pick the most basic ass man films of all time. Hell yeah.

I'm not going to pretend these are bad films (I don't even mind the Woody film) but this doesn't exactly scream "voracious cinephile with a near-encyclopedic knowledge of genre and world cinema" so much as "dad who watches a lot of TNT."

Genuinely feels like a tide changed when the UK government just refused assent to the Scottish Government's Gender Recognition Reform Scotland Act, via a power never invoked, which had gone through after years of scrutiny and ... nothign happened.

A very good piece.

Labour are indeed not alone in refusing to confront reality and deal with wicked problems like climate change, an aging population and the increasing decrepitude of late capitalism but they are the actual government currently in power so they need to wake up!

It's all bad but hadn't seen the bit where Farage says:

"The European Union is the prototype for the New World Order."

That is a seriously, deeply problematic term that taps into Illuminati and antisemitic conspiracy theories.

How the fuck did this man direct the course of our politics?
We kept the receipts. These comments, taken together, paint a picture of the man he is today.

Basically, this proposes that magistrates’ decisions on matter of factual guilt will be un-appealable.

So the vast majority of criminal convictions will result from unchallengeable panels of semi-professionals…
This does seem pretty much guaranteed, especially combined with increased use of magistrates, to risk fundamentally restricting people's rights. I am genuinely confused how it is getting so little attention, unless I have seriously missed something.

Which sadly makes other 100GB+ games feel all the weirder.
