The climate justice / prevent horrible disaster movement in Portland is very good and showed up in force to the Planning Commission meeting tonight.

We are powerful and will win.

Thank you and goodnight.

We're governed by a group of people who heard the story of the destruction of the Library of Alexandria and thought "sick, I'm gonna do that when I grow up"
Unbelievable. This would be a terrible blow to American science, writ large. It would decimate not only climate research, but also the kind of weather, wildfire, and disaster research that has underpinned half a century of progress in prediction, early warning, and increased resilience.
Exclusive: The Trump administration is moving to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Colorado, according to a senior White House official, taking aim at one of the world's leading climate research labs.

we sort of implicitly assume that to make big change we need millions following a particular person or ideology. actually we really need to all be acting like fractals

how do we build movements that win? by combining smaller coalitions up into meta coalitions!

so if you want to make big change, you should help a group get organized and be part of effective coalitions

To wit…they’re buying 776 tamales in the next 3 days. Chicago cyclists stay goated.

I told my organizers we needed to get as much cash as possible to vendors before the holidays. They responded by scheduling 5 home buyouts in the next 3 days. That’s 776 tamales and over $2,000. And we still have next week. 🫔 🫔🫔🫔🫔🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲

the proximate reason i post here — beyond the fact that i like a lot of you and enjoy reading your thoughts and jokes and observations — is that this is a non-algorithmic platform where people share lots of stuff and people read what is shared. that's still valuable even if it doesn't "influence!"

IMO it's FOMO on the AI bubble and the perceived need to pander to the financial analysts who set expectations for stock market performance.
Microsoft has "invested" over $13 billion into OpenAI. Why? Great question. But it's definitely not because the AI products out there right now are popular or effective.
we can kill them all if we just work together and ✨believe💫

I would say that you have to train yourself to focus on the actual people who care about you & who you care about/respect. Also you have to really live into your values. Both of those things will help you weather the opinions of strangers. I think that's different than not giving a fuck.
It takes training and conditioning to not give a fuck what people think. Contrary to popular belief, even if you’re born with the ability society and peer pressure will slowly make you give a fuck. You have to unlearn, recondition, and focus.

Not giving a fuck takes practice. Go practice.

This is per inhabitants which isn't the relevant statistic for making driving more safe. It's per mile driven where we're much closer to our peer nations.

Of course your data is a good argument we should move away from driving, but it doesn't support your statement.

Given the urgency, this was filed as a Nine-Twelfths agenda item for Wednesday, December 17th. I need nine Councilors to approve this. If you want Council to exercise its oversight powers in this matter, reach out to your Councilors and ask them to sign the 9/12 request.

Thank you.
