Epstein is the most garish and harrowing manifestation of this but oligarchy makes life miserable in a thousand other ways. A core point of democracy is that no one should have so much power that they can make themselves everybody's problem. We should have a political party that believes that
The Epstein emails should really end the debate over whether society should have billionaires. "Do you want there to be a class of people so powerful they can fuck your kids and no one will even try to do anything" seems like an easy sell if everyone in politics wasn't trying to get on their payroll

me too was this crazy moment where a lot of ppl were like, what if women could exist without threat of violence and degradation? and then the anti-trans backlash goes actually women can only be safe when they are confined to female spaces that are surveilled by the state and men at large

I have a very simple belief system.

"most men either neglect or despise women and either support or are bystanders for sexual assault and murder to the point where hegemonic manhood is inextricable from misogyny" is like just an elementary observation if you are a woman and some kind of existential personal attack if you are a man
To be fair, this kind of thing can happen if you've never actually talked to any women.

All those people downtown yesterday, no ICE involvement, and not one incident. ICE shows up in a neighborhood and now another Minnesotan is dead. It's pretty obvious who the violent outside agitators are.

At the end of the day, the Black Lives Matter era was about whether people should be killed in the street, and lots of people decided yeah and put those little blue flags on their cars. It spread to everyone because it stopped for no one.

Honest recommendation as a hyperonline dilettante:

If you have an issue with Some Asshole then you should write an essay ripping into Some Asshole instead of writing the Some Asshole Ruined The World And Their Opinions Are White and Bourgeois and Colonial essay.
And if I were to be very uncharitable, I'd note that part of the reason some people overestimate the importance of hyperonline dilettantes and irrelevant academics to transgender activism is because people tend to see a lot of folks most like themselves.

It’s really funny as a miserable lesbian to see people look at a miserable lesbian and go “seems problematic…” No bitch! Miserable lesbians are the backbone of society! Nothing works without us! Give us grenades and heroin!
Pluribus reddit discourse is so funny. “Are we supposed to root for Carol” you are supposed to watch how her character interacts with the world “she’s very unlikable” wow that’s crazy can they do that

This has been something I've struggled with since Covid tbh.

I've never been able to entirely reconcile my politics with the undeniable fact that most of my neighbours would be happy to see me dead rather than inconvenience themselves for even a moment.
Gently: I think the sweet little leftist fiction that right-wing politics are the result of epistemic gaps---that you can just newsletter and educate and evangelize your way to leftism---is dead.

Consider: many people want to hurt others. Want to feel superior. Want to inflict pain on the lesser.

legitimately getting embarrassing that the overemphasis on a false "sex/gender distinction" rather than "sex is the gendering of the body" means that conservatives keep trying to gotcha liberals with "sex as biological reality" and the latter can only make incredibly weak counterarguments

What texts remain easily accessible and what you have to go digging for is mostly the result of gatekeeping. The radical stuff. The scary stuff. The stuff that was conceived where the rubber met the road in movement work. That shit doesn't get reprinted.
