Agree, but prospective applicants can find out about employment prospects after uni by degree course: the Graduate Outcomes Survey includes that data for individual subjects, I think. And employment prospects after graduation are not just (and I'd even say not mainly) an indicator of degree quality.

Something grimly predictable about the way that the conversation about 'ripoff degrees' in the UK is always about degrees that aren't rip-offs, but are instead fairly obvious 'this student has chosen something unlikely to pay off economically' rather than the short tail of crap business degrees:
Everyone needs educating in the fight over university degrees
Political confusion over the purpose of these institutions means the obvious fixes are being neglected

At some point these imbeciles are going to realise that arts courses are *funding* the courses they do like and if they cut those places unis will just go bankrupt so no maths or science either.

The @stsucl.bsky.social History of Science Reading Group is back. Yesterday we discussed Helen M. Rozwadowski @oceanhistories.bsky.social , ‘Ocean literacy and public humanities’, Parks Stewardship Forum (2020) 36(3) escholarship.org/uc/item/11w5... (suggested by Janet Browne & Jordan Goodman)

If you want to win over younger voters, telling them they can't go to university is probably not going to help.

So-called #genAI means the abolition of the future through the proliferation of endless streams of stochastically rendered generic pasts. Having turned large parts of the cultural archive into training data, it now traps us in a foreverized pastness, a 24/7 nostalgia for a past that never existed

have just come across a YouTube account that has been using Sora to upload reels of fake, AI-generated “90s sitcoms” every few hours

This is already operating in the UK...and I can tell you that it's not just Turkish people who feel that way...

I'd love it if it looked as clean and tidy where we live.
There's one pavement that you cannot use because a tree has started growing through the tarmac...

A walk from near ARU on East Road down Burleigh Street in #Cambridge. Sad to see my home town in such a state. Dread to think what other places are like after 15 years of austerity. (I’ve not left the county since…2019 😳)

The government seems to be looking at the politicisation of the Manchester synagogue attack like a deer in headlights.

One reflection talking to other Jews today is how unshocking this is.

Numbing, upsetting, scary but not shocking. We all knew it was coming. Given the enormous rise in antisemitic incidents in recent years, it's a surprise it hasn't happened more often.

An administrative detail many are missing with the Trump administration is how Stephen Miller has taken the institutional backwater that was the Homeland Security Council and seems to be trying to turn it into the central node of National Security policy to sideline Rubio's NSC
