When I was in grad school a family donated to my dept $500/semester for each grad student to buy books from a local independent bookstore. I got to start my own library of books I could annotate and branch out into an area I wasn't originally studying (in which I ended up minoring). It was awesome.

Looking back through the tree, some of my Swedes & Norwegians also had farm names (which changed every time they moved), and some men had occupational names when they were in the army or navy, which were not passed down to a man's children, but to the man who took over his position when he retired.

My Nana was one of 5 daughters from Sweden with the surname Pettersdotter; their father was Petter Andersson. The older girls, 17 & 15, started working when they got here, and changed their names to Peterson. The 3 younger girls were enrolled in school under their father's surname, Anderson.
