boy is that true. in 2022-3, burrito taxis going up got about ten thousand times more attention online than the fact that it was the best labor market for low income workers in like 60 years
i will note again that there is a really unhealthy, unpleasant and strong current of consumerism that runs through the left in a way that genuinely didn’t used to be true
The responses this post is getting, combined with the animating grievances of large swathes of politics, has convinced me we need a kind of society wide PSA about how Buying Things Is Optional.

You don’t think video games should cost $100? Don’t buy the videogame. Buying Things Is Optional.

Reporter: The annual inflation rate moved in the wrong direction from 2.9% to 3%, a new 8 month high. When Trump was on the campaign trail he was saying inflation was out of control, but you can see clearly we're in a worse spot now than we were last fall when inflation was maybe the biggest issue

The same response as to the trans rights letter, in essence "What are you even talking about, you naive child?"
I asked the NYT why it played the “No Kings” parades—which drew an estimated 5 million+ protesters—with two small photos below the fold on their Sunday Page One, teasing to a story on page 23.

Their spokesperson gave me this answer, excerpted in today’s Laurels/Darts.

He's not dropping out with those poll numbers. But unless his judgement has gotten radically better fast and he has a way to transform this story, he's going to lose and hopefully it's in the primary.
Forget "Is Platner fascist in his heart." Facts:

As a young man he got a totenkopf tattoo.
He displayed it openly for 20-odd years
His social circle did not censure him during this time.
It became public knowledge.
He got a hasty not-quite-coverup.

and ask:

Does any of this display good judgement

People who don’t provide a link have been perhaps trained by X, which penalized them, or are just cherry picking
Shouting into the void here but in general, if an article is interesting enough to post a screenshot of, it's interesting enough to post a link to so the people you're sharing with can actually read it, tell who wrote it and where it's from, assess its credibility, etc.

Consider how few anecdotes it took for the media to declare a Free Speech on Campus crisis.

Every day we get more evidence that the Republican Party is teeming with white supremacists yet elite institutions refuse to frame this as a crisis that needs the nation’s attention.

The "Reagan Foundation" should be ashamed of itself. The ad accurately represents Reagan's views on tariffs - he considered himself a free trader - and no one needs their permission to quote him.
Here's the statement from the Reagan Foundation.

"The ad misrepresents the Presidential Radio Address, and the Government of Ontario did not seek nor receive permission to use and edit the remarks."

A president who can tear down 1/3 of the White House can tear down the entire White House. A president who can steal $230M from the treasury can steal $1T from the Treasury. We have both legalized and tolerated Trump’s crimes, so they will only get bigger.

Does that sound simplistic? Yes. In fact, it sounds very similar to a refrain made by a presidential candidate in 2016 who, you know, won the election and control of Congress with it. It's almost as if populism works more in elections than zoning reform.

Right off the bat, Democrats' platform should be:
1. we're tearing it down
2. We're making Trump and his donors pay for it
3. We're sure as shit not attending any events or grand openings for it
4. Holy hell this is ugly as fuck
5. THE FUCKING WHITE HOUSE

That's it. That's the campaign

The financial boondoggle of this, by the way, is even before we get into the fact that EVERY PART OF THIS IS ILLEGAL, HE LITERALLY TORE DOWN HALF OF THE WHITE HOUSE--THE MOTHERFUCKING WHITE HOUSE--WITHOUT ASKING ANYONE IF HE COULD DO THAT.

I cannot believe I have already blocked three people replying with “here’s a tweet Hakeem Jeffries made. Don’t you look foolish now. I am very intelligent.” Why are people like this. Why are you so fanatically obsessed with insisting nothing different ever needs to be done to win an election

This thing is such an obvious political albatross with absolutely no negative trade-off for Democrats to focus on. It will help no one. It benefits a handful of Trump’s, which is friends. It costs half a billion (likely more) while airports are closing and the price of food has doubled.

The ballroom is such an obvious winning political issue for Dems, it’s breathtaking how little they want to talk about it. It will be ugly, omnipresent, a literal metaphor for Trump‘s disinterest in doing anything that actually helps American voters. Run on it, you fucking morons.

Politics is the art of making people care. Effective movements *shift the polls* by framing issues as moral questions.

If the fascists can make people care about conspiracy theories like QAnon, we can make people care about freedom and democracy.

(George Lakoff wrote several books on this.)
"normies do not care about this thing and so it is no use raising a stink" is imho just an excuse for not doing politics, which is the job of making normies care about something
