i love european olympics opening ceremonies. the second the ioc names a european host city the prime minister calls the culture minister into their office and says "find me your strangest homosexuals. give each of them a period of our great nation's history, a kilo of cocaine, and Ten Million Euros"

Years from now, it'll be difficult to explain the things people in media were wailing about before all this. Sophomores writing underconsidered op-eds about cultural appropriation. Protests against demagogues on campus. YA drama. "Mobs" on Twitter. These were the threats to free society.

if you push them on how exactly they think this will go down, they generally end up at "you're naive if you think trump isn't gonna try something" and no shit, no one's saying he won't.

but there's a bit of daylight between "trying some shit" and "rigged/no election", so knock it off w. the latter
strange to me that a lot of people on this website simultaneously agree that the administration is run by incompetents who struggle to carry out their agenda without major political blowback AND that they’ll pull off a complex and sophisticated effort to rig elections and prevent defeat in November

rightwingers see people caring about others in their community and instead of finding that inspiring they think it’s some sort of grand conspiracy because they don’t understand what it means to care for others you don’t personally know

Me: That sounds very cool. And this all happens on my telephone?

but i think bouie is correct to point out the logistical barriers to “cancelling the midterms.” trump admin clearly has little interest in actually understanding/manipulating the workings of govt. and if you don’t go that route then you need brute force, and he also doesn’t have that +

the sort of liminal space american politics exists in rn — a fed govt that *wants to be* fascist and *is* doing a ton of violence/damage but is also very clearly outnumbered and losing battles left and right in elections, courts, the streets — is i think hard for a lot of us to get our heads around
ICE can't even deal with irate middle-aged midwesterners. how does he occupy hundreds, if not thousands, of polling cites and precincts? trump v. illinois clarified that he has no legal authority to unilaterally commandeer national guards, how does he move forward from there?

Your regular reminder that there is no legal path from martial law to suspending elections in this country.

That doesn't mean there is no path. It just means that we need to reject the framing that the federal government has any legal authority to cease elections.

I *think* that appealing to the basic decency of most Americans in the aftermath of Renee Good's murder is smart politics. But mostly I think it's worth doing because if that decency really isn't there then this whole rebuilding democracy thing isn't going to work.
