It was like how my Chaucer professor in college forced us to learn enough of Chaucerian English to read it as it was written, memorize passages, and so forth. Did it slow the class a bit? Absolutely. Did it mean that you can read it and find it actually funny and vibrant instead of a chore? Yes.

My teacher in high school had us act out passages and helped us understand the emotion and it meant that until the end of high school some of my recitations were still popular among my classmates.

I think this also speaks to why there is a portion of the Too Online Trans Community that is fixated on creating a worldview wherein they are always miserable and only accepting the echo chamber of misery is real community, because when you're conditioned to accept misery as the default state...
