it really clicked when I learned that some of those high-profile 1990s militias were specifically and almost exclusively opposed to the fed govt that added the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 20th amendments to the constitution

the generous read is people in an atomized society—where everyone is expected to apply individual solutions to systemic problems—think collectivism means they have to take on someone else's problems on top of their own. they don't realize the collective can reduce the burden on them individually.

we can't experience the counterfactual to know how much worse it would be. people who would have died, but did not, can't know it would have happened. even if they could know, the individualism runs deep for health especially. they would assume they lived because they made the right choices.

people losing their shit over Mamdani's speech about collectivism is probably connected to the last time they were asked to give something up to benefit others during the pandemic emergency. the sacrifices helped in a way that was intangible. they don't feel like they benefited, even if they did.

I don’t know why anyone would admit to using AI. It’s like trying to pass off a microwave pizza as the real deal, only you’re bragging about how good you put the numbers into the microwave panel like that’s some sort of skill. It’s embarrassing. You should be embarrassed.
