“Less Lethal Munitions” (LLMs) need to be renamed and redesignated. They are not AS lethal. They are just lethal in slightly fewer instances. If this device had hit me in the head, chest or stomach instead of leg, I would be dead. This is a LLM.

In August, we got a bit of extra money from a generous donor, and I used it to expand into coverage of trans life in American prisons.

This piece, by incarcerated journalist B Speaks, describes the chaos Georgia's forced detransition regime, currently halted by the courts, wreaked in one prison.

Outstanding journalism (and a riveting read).

This is an excellent case study of so many issues in health care, and the relationship between hospital systems and their communities.

Kudos to PP and the reporting team. Independent journalism is filling a critical void.
NEW: In a five-part series, “Sick in a Hospital Town,” ProPublica’s @gingerthompson.bsky.social pursues the question:

Why are people in Albany, Georgia, so sick when its most powerful institution is a hospital?

Start with Part 1 here:
Sick in a Hospital Town, Part 1: The Business of Care
Welcome to Albany, Georgia, where one hospital dominates the political and economic landscape. The story of Phoebe Putney Memorial is the story of American health care.

people need to come to grips with the fact that we don’t have a democracy in the US, never have, and building one is the world-historic task set before us
I think people are failed understand that for democracy, to be rebuilt and reestablished in the United States. There is going to have to be a reckoning. and it’s going to feel very, very scary for a while as democracy is solidified again as it will feel like a war for many people.

don't use that word
if you call the bad guys the slur, you're only legitimizing their dehumanizing language and reinforcing their assertion that the people commonly refered to by that slur are subhuman and therefore subject to enslavement/extermination.

you're welcome.

now stop being an asshole.

I mean the Dredd Scott decision basically sparked the civil war, which the US won and then enacted birthright citizenship to reject Dredd Scott, so getting rid of it is just a reembracing of race being the basis of class and a bunch of other racist bullshit.

Like we fought the civil war about this
without birthright citizenship in the united states, you don't have a democracy and you don't have rule of law.

revoking birthright citizenship gives fascists free rein to purge the country of literally anyone they don't like. it opens the door to atrocities and mass murder. i am not exaggerating.
