New interview with the awesome, musician, songwriter, political and cultural organizer Ira Temple! Ira work on and off the bandstand has changed my life for the better.

It was an honor to play on two rocking tracks for this big debut album! Go listen.

Looked at a music “starter pack” was not surprised to not recognize a single person. Humbling to remember the world of music is unbelievably vast and also I am so distant from most mainstream fields/scenes/paths…

Anyway here’s a track I recorded with The Body thebody.bandcamp.com/track/hallow...

This morning’s klezmer highlight. New/old recording to me of a fun tune I’ve been playing for years.

Called by many names! The name on this track, the “Ezmilover Bulgar” in the Hoffman family book, , or me, simply, “Bulgar no. 9.”

I feel for all my friends in New York who worked so hard to organize for @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social, especially @jfrejnyc.bsky.social (and so often get ignored by the mainstream press), that the price for winning is to work harder, but I know they are up for it!
As @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social stated yesterday: “My message to the more than 100,000 volunteers who brought us to this point is that the work continues”

Join the work, join the movement, join JFREJ!

Monthly premium going from $500 to $1800 here. Luckily a tax credit can bring it down to "only" $1100 per month.

Instead it looks like I'm going to be paying about $700/mo for a significantly worse plan.

Everyone in Congress knows this is happening and none of them, Rs or Ds, care in the least.

More food for thought from @bcmerchant.bsky.social

Helpful hearing Cory Doctorow uplifting sectoral bargaining over copyright reform for artists dealing with AI and other forms of extraction. I’d relish it if musician unions work affected me directly!

My brain’s wake up music! Is this song titled “And Now” or “Golden Heart?”

Don Cherry is the perfect blend of melody and noise. Or a better way to understand it I think is that the boundaries of the melody stretch far, far beyond our usual understanding of key or sound.

Found out about this absolutely wild human endeavor from @rcmacleod.bsky.social in the @aftermath.site newsletter (utterly recommend signing up) and as someone who plays Yiddish music and has performed it in this part of the world, I have feelings. Not even sure what they are, but they are strong!

Totally great conversation between a new favorite @bcmerchant.bsky.social and Cory Doctorow.

Learned a new term Vocational Awe coined by Fobazi Ettarh - notions of our work as sacred prevent us from standing up for ourselves as laborers. Reminds me that musicians are really susceptible to this.
Excellent pod with @bcmerchant.bsky.social and Cory Doctorow.

TL;DR: Tech workers, organize! It's the only way to disenshittify the internet (and regain a sense of agency).

Played with Elaine of blessed memory for years as a student and then as a band member with her and her daughter Susan Watts who still carries the family tradition. Elaine fucking rocked and cursed with the best. Philly as fuck and the best klezmer beat on the planet. Miss her realness.
Elaine Hoffman Watts is today's featured percussionist. she was an amazing klezmer drummer.
