"Imagine you stole all of the intellectual property in the world. And you're using it to help people write middling emails and make revenge porn about women, and also children. And you're powering this plagiarism and non-consensual porn machine by eating up what's left of humanity's carbon budget."
How to explain AI to your family this holiday season | CNN Business
Politics, football and movies are among the many topics that tend to come up around Thanksgiving. In 2025, a new question may arise at the table: Why the heck is everyone talking about AI, and what sh...

The syndrome has a name.

Dunning-Kruger.

The less you know, the more you think you know. With corollary: The stupider you are, the smarter you think you are.
Groups of dudes who self-segregate & talk each other into believing that they are uniquely brilliant & everyone else just doesn't get it ... are responsible for some of history's most florid horrors.
It's kind of mind-blowing how these tech dorks think they're so smart and have the utmost confidence in their genius, while actual smart people are constantly doubting themselves and critiquing their own arguments.

Where do you get your ideas?
When I worked in a bookstore, any person asking why we had one political book or another in stock and acting like I personally agreed with them (the owner just bought one of the top 3 or 5 bestsellers in the genre, I had zero input, I ordered kids, fiction, and history)
What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

We're coming for you, bros.
"All of this falls apart if humans don't adopt the tech. This is why you've seen Meta cram its lame chatbots into WhatsApp and Instagram. This is why Notepad and Paint now have useless Copilot buttons on Windows. This is why Google Gemini wants to "help you" read and reply to your emails."

Don't call it a bubble! Loss-making monster OpenAI is on the hook for $1.4 trillion (with a T) in compute commitments. How can this go on?

This thread is absolutely glorious.
I have been doing entirely too much earnest posting about deep things recently, I need to do a proper thread about hippo testicles or something just to keep myself sane.

Oh by the way hippos have migratory testicles.

I just saw this exact sentiment in a real headline scrolling by.

Is it satire when it's dead on?
Republicans say they like fascism and Democrats say that they are against it. The truth is more complicated.

This is intentional. An ignorant populace is a biddable populace. They've been building it for decades.
The scenario in which there are oligarchs powerful enough to succeed at their AI con and force LLMs onto the rest of society is the outright fascist and dystopian scenario. That higher ed has largely capitulated to the scam means it had already been deskilled. We need to understand how and why.
“Ultimately, the collective strategy of AI companies threatens to deskill precisely those people who are essential for society to function(…) automation of knowledge and culture by private companies is a worrying prospect – conjuring dystopian and outright fascistic scenarios.” — @olivia.science

The latest version of that guy who comes up to you at a party and says, "I have an Idea! You write the book and we'll split the profits! 60-40!"
A really interesting, fundamental conceit of all these AI enthusiasts is that the ideas they have are great and all they need is this magic box to execute them. As pedestrian as these people‘s brains are for anything except self aggrandizement, I kind of doubt that’s what’s holding them back.
It’s tiresome at this point, but again, their entire pitch is “wouldn’t it be great if there were no such things as talent, craft, and skill,” and what that means is a bland, slop-filled world. www.businessinsider.com/marc-andrees...

it’s funny how deep the american exceptionalism brainwashing goes. i know better. i’ve known better for years. i’ve breathed gas clouds just like this one. and yet every time i see pictures like this, i want so badly to say “i can’t believe this is america.” but i won’t. because i know better.
