A huge part of the book-banning project aims to make work that provides a public good feel impossible and unsafe! It targets authors, absolutely, but it’s also trying to add unreasonable administrative burdens to the work of teachers and librarians.
Officials in Tennessee aren't just banning books, they're now demanding information on who checked out contested (largely LGBTQ+) books, including names, addresses, and "household composition."

A librarian who was given the directive has come forward asking for whistleblower protections.
Tennessee whistleblower says library board chair sought private data as part of state's book purge
A First Amendment expert told The Advocate that there are "huge" legal implications stemming from the situation.

Most people have memory-holed 2020-2022, but we experienced generational trauma on a global scale and at some point that kind of thing bubbles up to the collective consciousness.

Then and only then will we realize the extent to which grief and loss looms over every decision we have made ever since

The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

Brown has over 1,200 cameras and it wasn’t enough because cameras are a security blanket we’ve all been sold. They don’t prevent crimes and they barely solve crimes but in the meantime surveillance companies got rich and no one had to address the societal root causes of crime and violence.

Unlike the Trump administration, Boston follows the law. And we deliver for our residents:

Over the last four years, Boston has created more affordable housing and helped more families become first-time homeowners than ever before.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Thursday that it is opening an investigation into Boston’s housing policies, accusing the city of discriminating...against white people.
Trump's HUD accuses Boston of engaging in "redlining" against white people
Over fifty years ago, the Trump family faced a similar government challenge for refusing to rent to Black people.

This is my friend's cat. Its name is Cookie Swirl, and it disappeared in the American section of Charlotte airport on 11/10. We're asking for your help. She doesn't have any other socials, so if you can post it widely to see if anyone knows where it is. It's a little thing, but matters a lot to her.

Affirmations for poets, songwriters, artists:

The notion that political art is less effective when it’s more direct is deeply ahistorical.

Some artists are more concerned about being called "preachy" than they are about this fascist crisis.

Art won't be enough to win, but we won't win without it.

REPEAT AFTER ME (but really, after Neil Kraus):

Wage stagnation and underemployment are not problems that education can fix. We cannot "upskill" students into well-paying jobs that do. not. exist.
Do not accept the premise that education is to blame for abysmal jobs outcomes.

“The fantasy economy's framing of economic inequality… focuses exclusively on education…deflects attention away from decades of public policies and changing business practices that have…contributed to stagnating wages”

They need to stop saying "AI," full stop.

It's a bait-and-switch at this point.

They point at some of the incredible work done by "AI" in medical imaging and detection, or protein-folding.

Then they say "AI is the future" to push their shitty LLMs.

We need precision in nomenclature.
