I don’t make a habit of listening to speeches out of Davos, but this is genuinely one for the history books: a clear-eyed acknowledgment that the old international order was partly a fiction and is now a lie, and a call to act collectively to build resilience and sovereignty in the face of hegemony.
Seriously, WHEREVER you are in the world, I recommend watching all of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s powerful & already famous speech at Davos.

Can’t underestimate its leadership importance.

Key line: “Middle powers must work together, because if we’re not at the table, we’re on the menu.”

"The lies this administration is telling about Renee Good aren’t those you deploy as part of a cover-up. They’re those you use when you want to show you can get away with anything."

That's @radleybalko.bsky.social, quoted in this piece. I say this opens door to deeper understanding of this moment:
Trump just openly declared that invoking the Insurrection Act will let him implement his immigration crackdown without going "through the court system."

That's nonsense, but it's telling: Trump *thinks* it allows him to rule like a military dictator. 1/

Trump Blurts Out Real Reason for Insurrection Act Threat—and It’s Dark
He thinks it lets him abuse his power however he wants. It’s up to the courts—and the American people—to show him otherwise.

In case anyone's looking for a solid ICE warning whistle, I did some research on the best model. Can confirm, it's loud. Ships with free earplugs and a lanyard. Recommended:

Sending this to all these European officials can't happen by itself, people on the NSC staff were involved. Either they think this is a good thing to do, or they want it exposed. I'm sure a few of them are in the first category, but I'm betting not enough. So I wonder what their thinking really is.

To add to this, almost all of the U.S.’s problems are linked to its hatred of Black people and that it hates Black people more than it loves anyone else. Our laws and policies are largely based on making sure Black people (and sometimes other groups) don’t benefit even at the expense of others.
If there's one empirical insight I'd want everyone to understand about American politics, it's this:

America's problems are solved problems. Just not here.

What would change if the US simply matched the average of 31 peer democracies? Not Denmark or Norway. Just the middle of the pack. 🧵

NEW: This week, Daily Show host Jon Stewart introduced his audience to Jenin Younes, describing her as a courageous civil rights attorney who had been canceled by both the right and left and therefore “must be doing something right.”

Really, she spent years undermining public health—and Democrats.
