To kick off posting actual content here, an early-season West Texas storm that kicked off our 2024 LIFT deployments. Storm wasn't anything to write home about in terms of impact, but sometimes those are the best to just watch and appreciate. 4/15/24

The acting director of ICE told Congress, under oath, that local law enforcement in Colorado leaked raid plans, allowing gang members to escape.

After 9NEWS questioned ICE's claim and its timeline, ICE deleted the claim from its social media platforms.

I have so much contempt for people like this. Your entire remit was to find out whether children were being pressured into drugs and surgeries. Your own findings indicate tiny numbers, long assessments & high satisfaction.

So what do you do? You go to the press & pretend it's still an open debate

People can have different political opinions about immigration policy. Political differences are fine, healthy for a democracy.

But if you’re okay with this, that’s not a political opinion. That is a moral failing.

It’s true that human cognition is poorly understood and the question ‘what makes us human?’ has changed a lot over time as various technologies have emerged.

But the fact that thinking and speech can now be simulated doesn’t call into question thinking and speech themselves.

A very real dilemma: you really can’t a lot of stuff this administration puts out BUT reducing trust in government in general is very bad for progressive causes and ultimately great for the populist right
Bluesky in a nutshell.

Some context: BLS released its jobs numbers today, which were better than expected, and resistance libs would rather stay mad/conspiratorial than listen to actual on-the-ground experts that the data is still reliable.

we almost never saw pieces like this when the prevailing epstein accusations were based on totally made up claims from the right. now that the actual evidence in the files implicates trump and other right wing figures, we get 5 articles like this a day.
Last week the far right started peddling a narrative that the outrage over Epstein is a moral panic. Today, like clockwork, a more polite version of that narrative appears in the Atlantic.

We all intuitively understand that slower speeds = fewer deaths. Would you rather be hit by a car going 5 mph or a car going 25 or even just 15 mph? Yet somehow when folks are asked to consider restrictions on their own ability to drive fast, their understand of physics evaporates.

In 2014, New York City lowered its citywide default speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph. In the year that followed:

- Traffic fatalities fell by more than 22 percent

- Pedestrian fatalities fell by more than 25 percent

transalt.org/reports-list...
Also, most car crashes occur at intersections, and not because a car was exceeding the speed.

My bet is that even if you made it so no one could speed anywhere, it would only marginally lower traffic fatalities.

That's why you still have speed cameras and other enforcement mechanisms! The fact that some people will break the law to get around this is not a reason to give up on an intervention that would — again — save thousands of lives every year.
You would immediately be able to buy a speed limiter hacking kit on the black market and all the worst people would have them disabled. We've seen this before with every other technological solution to a societal problem, from covid vaccination cards to plane transponders.
