“I was afraid of learning what someone might think, especially someone under 40,” he said. People would drop off cookies for those pulling late nights on the Russia-Ukraine war — there was no such warmth for those pushing Biden’s policies ahead on Israel.

Working on Israel “felt like a long nightmare that never really ended,” the former official said. Trying to balance his longstanding affection for Israel and his outrage for what was happening in Gaza was difficult: “There was no welcome middle ground that was at all possible.”

My first thought was “wow I hope this guy didn’t give out his name because he could absolutely be charged” and yup, he is correct to stay anonymous.

This man’s account is shocking. His neighbors’ situation is shocking. The entire Chicago raid is shocking.

On the other side was a mom and her 7-year-old daughter, pleading for his help.
"I wasn't planning on letting her stay, but I didn't know what the hell was going on," the man said of his Venezuelan migrant neighbors. But he quickly relented. The little girl was inconsolable and hid under his bed.
"I didn't want them to take her," said the man, who didn't want to be named because he fears he'll be targeted by federal authorities for his actions.
"I gave her my bedroom, and I just told her,
'Just stay there. Don't open, don't, shh, just stay quiet," he recalled telling the mom and daughter as he choked back tears.

lol, i figured out what happened. The zoom update was defaulting my scheduled meetings to "offline" (so that I can use zoom to schedule in person meetings??), which is why it wasn't generating a link.

i don't want to have to ask for every podcast guest's email, especially if we've been corresponding on discord or through twitter/bluesky DMs. Maybe I'm just in the minority and most people don't use it that way, but it seems like a feature some people would still find useful?

why did zoom update so that i can't copy an invite link for a scheduled zoom call? what's the point of that? it only lets me invite using someone's email. I can't get an invite link unless I've launched the call already (unless it's buried somewhere now).

(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.
