Going to war with our NATO allies probably isn’t going to happen, but seeing smarmy fucks like this fantasizing about how easy and cool it would be to spill the blood of our NATO allies helps strain the bonds of our international relationships in ways that can’t be mended for generations.
Rep. Greg Steube: "You see Macron and the French sending troops to Greenland. I would love to see the US military up against French troops in Greenland, because it would not last very long. It would be a very small skirmish ... we don't care about what Macron and the French want."

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.

It is somehow both unsurprising and yet completely infuriating to see the suggestion from someone whose name is a byword for leadership failure that New Zealand should abandon any efforts at international leadership.

Also: eye contact! I’ve never made so much eye contact with strangers while walking before.

We’re all checking in with each other and there are so many little gestures of connection.
This is serious enough I'm reposting my own posts.

Minnesotans are talking to and befriending strangers.

And being openly emotional and swearing a lot in public.

People who would never in a million years so much as boo or heckle anyone at a sporting event are heckling ICE like whoa.

Unfortunately, if Labour lose the election (which I think is likely), we'll all be left to wonder why on earth they decided to run a second election with Hipkins, a man with no political imagination or charisma.

At this point I'm honestly surprised at how little we've heard from the Government as thousands face weather-related emergencies and multiple people are missing, possibly deceased.

Like, I don't have high expectations, but this is still well below those.

I have been actively involved in protest movements for 24 years. I have never seen anything approaching this scale. Minneapolis is not accepting what's happening here. ICE fucking murdered a woman for participating in this, and all that did is bring out more people, from more walks of life.

If Mark Carney is right and the rules-based order is gone, where are we as a nation? New Zealand was an actor in the creation of the post-war consensus, but it's hard to imagine a leadership less fit to meet the moment than the current lot.

they’re going to need to impose consequences that are felt in a personal way by the people in charge

ruining Trump’s big sports show, travel bans for the GOP (or, hell, all of congress), travel bans for rich Trump allies, sanctions on the Trump family

they feel invincible, change their minds
Honestly boycotting the World Cup would be the most effective and probably the least disruptive of all of the options available to Europe. I’m not sure how you can send teams and fans to contribute to a spectacle designed entirely to celebrate a guy trying to invade your territory.

civics education isn't a silver bullet (who decides what gets taught?) but *organising* can be

I think the electorate is much more switched on than people give it credit for, they know what they need and want, its been a failure of the left, and sorry *particularly* the Greens, to tap into that
[my hot take] I suspect the reason the Greens do better among educated people is, in part, the lack of civics education in schools. I've met numerous people who tell me they prefer the Greens but vote Labour to "keep National out" not realising that under MMP a Green vote has the same effect
