Congratulations to Maria Corina Machado, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize - her incredible optimism has already changed her country. I spoke to her, and wrote about her, at the beginning of this year:

The ‘Anthropological Change’ Happening in Venezuela
Maduro is still in place, but a pro-democracy movement is transforming the beleaguered country.

Someone is not going to like the idea that defending democracy and opposing authoritarianism is the way you win the Nobel Peace Prize.

Breaking news: María Corina Machado has been awarded the prize for ‘keeping the flame of democracy burning amidst a growing darkness’ . The win dashes the hopes of US President Donald Trump. on.ft.com/4ocHAKY

Nobel Peace Prize awarded to María Corina Machado, a Venezuelan democracy crusader:

The Venezuelan opposition leader has become a symbol of democratic resistance against an increasingly authoritarian regime.

Guess we extra know why Trump didn’t even make the list

Dunno man, seems a little misleading to write an article about Trump describing activity in Portland and Chicago as “insurrection” with a 33 year old photo of a burning donut shop taken in the 1992 LA Riots (sans caption explaining that) as the header on all your posts about it.
The picture from
The article with a picture of an armed men standing in front of a burning donut shop. You must click through to read the caption “
Two National guardsmen stand guard outside a burning donut shop in Los Angeles on April 30, 1992.
The National Guard was called in to aid police during the second day of rioting in the city.”

How many school shootings have happened in the UK since Dunblane?

None. Not one.

We banned handguns. Our police don’t walk around armed. And guess what? Kids don’t get gunned down in classrooms.

It’s not complicated, it’s about choosing life over firepower.
We made that choice in 1996.

Our authoritarianism is run on clichés borrowed from the Eastern Europe of twenty years ago. Paid protestors, disloyal cities, evil Soros, vast conspiracies — it was all tiresome then and there, and now it’s pathetic.

Trump: "They're, like, insurrectionists, they're terrible people. But you really wonder why. Why are they doing it? What are they gaining? Other than they're obviously paid. They're paid a lot of money."

It was a beautiful Sunday in Portland. Farmer’s markets, the Portland Marathon, peaceful protests, and some views of Mt. Hood. This city is vibrant, peaceful, and resilient. We do not need a federal occupation, and we sure as hell don’t want one.

very cool that if you are working on behalf of right-wing culture warriors, you no longer need standing to have your claim adjudicated by the supreme court

It's not just that they're going to strike down a law against conversion therapy, it's that they're going to do it on behalf of made-up claims from a straw plaintiff who can't honestly show the law affected her at all
tomscocca.bsky.social
One thing about American's widespread distrust and disapproval of the Supreme Court is that mainstream news coverage mostly doesn't dwell on stuff like standing, so people don't even begin to grasp how rigged the Court truly is www.nytimes.com/live/2025/10...

I’m still really pissed about this. I used to stop by the REI store in the Pearl all the day. Now whenever I go to REI I’m usually feeling pretty spicy about it.

When prices were going up under Biden there was a constant deluge of news stories about it because the media did not like Biden and wanted him to lose. Under Trump there is not a constant deluge of news stories about coffee prices because they like Trump and want him to win

everything is on fire these days, sure, but how is it that 50% of all news stories are not about how I just spent $20 on a bag of store brand coffee at fucking costco

The coming national horror is that if Portland's *truly* minimal level of protest justifies federalizing and deploying troops, they can and will be federalized and deployed anywhere the President wants and whenever he wants.
gabrielmalor.bsky.social
My initial read on this argument: Judge Nelson is eager to disagree with his 9th Cir. colleagues that federalizing the NG is reviewable at all.

He's also eager to disagree with Judge Immergut that the Portland protests were small and under control.
gabrielmalor.bsky.social
McArthur about the ICE protesters: "these are violent people." Says the president is entitled to say "enough is enough."

Asks for a stay pending appeal. Sits.

Argument is over.

Law schools try to dissuade this type of analysis and lawyers are reticent to speak out loud because so much of the power of law is in the shared professional consensus about its validity and getting the public broadly to accept its legitimacy, but ffs we have a bunch of people trying to do fascism.
