Either universities are private businesses that get to set their own priorities or they’re public goods that are obligated to serve everyone. You can’t have it both ways.

The mass protests in Ecuador against austerity measures dictated by international finance is clear example of the export-extraction vicious cycle generated by today’s international financial architecture, as we describe in a recent @cplusc.bsky.social report: climateandcommunity.org/wp-content/u...
The image is a circular diagram illustrating a cycle of interconnected issues. Starting with "Debt," the cycle moves to "Export-oriented production," which leads to "Extractivism." This then causes "Social and environmental underinvestment," followed by "Civil society opposition," and "Repression." The repression leads to "Climate vulnerability and biodiversity loss," which in turn drives the need for more "Debt," completing the cycle. The diagram uses purple rounded rectangles to represent each stage, with arrows indicating the direction of the cycle.

Deep dive into the surge in US pedestrian deaths:

"It’s not that more pedestrians are getting hit by vehicles; it’s that the ones that are getting hit are more likely to die."

"[That] seems like fairly strong evidence for the theory that the rise in large SUVs is behind the uptick in ped deaths."
Why Are So Many Pedestrians Killed by Cars in the US?
It’s unfortunately not uncommon for pedestrians to be killed by cars in the US.

we are literally besieged in all aspects of american life by unrestrained plutocrats who themselves are surrounded by toadies and sycophants, not one person there to tell them that their hair looks idiotic, their plan to invade portland is insane, that their AI does not work. bring back hard truths

I think that's part of it but the other part is it's men -and in this case especially rich men - and they already don't do those tasks, so they don't see them. This is why we're getting Samsung TV's with ads and not fridges that remind us to eat the lettuce before it spoils

This is the tell that they don't want people with creative capacity. They want menials and drones that they can use extract wealth from their lives and labors, then discard before the next quarterly report.

The actual cruel burden is the point.

it’s said all the time but I think we should continue to hammer home how insane it is that we got dead-eyed bros trying to sell us robots that will free us from the supposedly cruel burden of “creative careers” instead of the actual cruel burden of “doing menial household chores”

Caltrain’s new electric trains are designed to recuperate energy when breaking. The agency made a deal to sell that energy back to the local power supplier, which will net the agency millions of dollars in annual revenues.
Caltrain electrified trains return power to grid, offsetting energy costs
For decades, Caltrain has been known for what it takes off the roads. Now, it's being rewarded for what it puts back into the power grid.

It's likely that you know this song, perhaps even love it. But just take a moment to revel in the utter masterpiece that it is.

Surrender yourself to it.

You deserve it.

Just openly cheering the destruction of any representation of gay people in public space. They think their power is totally unrestricted, and the entire country will support them rolling back society to the 1950s, or maybe the 1850s
