Institutionally, Jews were invested (sometimes paternalistically and hierarchically, granted) in the fates of Jews in other parts of the world *as Jews* and there are travelogues and educational/charitable networks that attest to this throughout the 17th-19th century. I teach abt some in my classes.

Yes. The only people who have difficulty understanding this are people who know nothing about the Jewish world.

"Anti-Zionism" can mean everything from "Every Jew goes to Poland" to "what we used to call Martin Buber's binationalist Zionism" to "Haredi belief in waiting for Moshiach." So when people ask me if anti-Zionism is antisemitism, my response is always, "Define your terms."

this is doubly infuriating because the reason coffee in particular is so expensive is directly a result of tariffs, illegally applied to brazil to try to compel them to pardon bolsanaro. it’s unambiguously trump’s fault and it’s totally corrupt

When prices were going up under Biden there was a constant deluge of news stories about it because the media did not like Biden and wanted him to lose. Under Trump there is not a constant deluge of news stories about coffee prices because they like Trump and want him to win
delrayser.bsky.social
everything is on fire these days, sure, but how is it that 50% of all news stories are not about how I just spent $20 on a bag of store brand coffee at fucking costco

I support what Ms. Rachel is doing advocacy wise and her calming effects on toddlers generally, but Obama is very specifically talking about hostage families here: barackobama.medium.com/my-statement.... This is seeing what you want to see.

AI discourse has taught me that there are apparently millions of adults who honestly believe that their 3rd grade teacher had them do a research paper on an animal because she really wanted to know more about leopards and shit.

@beijingpalmer.bsky.social related to your complaint of how the English dept is bad now
aelkus.bsky.social
nonfiction writing in english has been degenerating into a garbage fire since rhe early to mid 2010s. one of the recurrent signs of it is just an increasing emphasis on personal essays written by deranged people
kendrawrites.com
I'm going to start calling essays like this "odes to whiteness" because the underlying premise is that they are like this because they don't anticipate any social cost to smelling bad.

This one is v. frustrating because it tries to lump in perfumes with the broader (problematic) beauty industry

@mit.edu has done an incredibly important service to the nation by being willing to be the first school to reject the administration's "compact."

President Kornbluth focuses—and she's right—on the principle that "scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone."
The document also includes principles with which we disagree, including those that would restrict freedom of expression and our independence as an institution. And fundamentally, the premise of the document is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone.

Trump has been illegally bombing boats off the coast of Venezuela.

Tim Kaine and Adam Schiff forced a vote on reasserting Congress's role over war powers and ending this reckless
warmongering.

It failed 48-51.

Murkowski and Paul voted yes.

Fetterman voted no.

nice to see others adopting my "hetero buttigieg" framing for conor lamb. (as 2022 pennsylvania was at least as much iowa 2020 (pete pantsing bernie) as the 2016 presidential primary writ large (hillary doing a kristalnacht on bernie).)

The president says there are very few stores left in Portland, Oregon, and the ones that are left are made of plywood.

I know we’re numb to this, but in any other time he’d have been removed by the 25th Amendment by now

Trump: "Portland, I mean -- every time I look at that place it's burning down. There are fires all over the place. When a store -- there are very few of them left -- but when a store owner rebuilds a store they build it out of plywood. They don't put up storefronts anymore. They just put wood up."

For early modern Lutherans, you can't receive communion unless you're reconciled with other people in your community.

This is from a list of people who go to Lutheran communion in Neustadt-Aisch. I was looking for soldiers, because if they not only go to church in town but also receive communion, it implies they're integrated with the locals. Many of the soldiers here were from a regiment of Gallas's dragoons.
