This is what pisses me off about the lazy derogation of “virtue signaling”. The reason for leaders doing pro-social things in public is not to show others that they are superior but to convey “this is important & good & YOU SHOULD DO IT TOO”
people need a much richer conception of performance and authenticity than what we currently have
I've seen people scoffing at this as a "photo op." And I think it might be a photo op. It's a chance for people who need these services to see their new mayor and make eye contact, they can take photos. They can hear his promises and hold him to account too.
