I think that her being a white woman "mouthing off" to him is part of the trigger. He already likely felt "disrespected" by her wife earlier. To me, this explains some white people's "she had it coming" attitude. How DARE a white woman not submit to his authority? He had to put her in her place.

A thing for people to unlearn is believing 1) people must be helpless to deserve help and 2) those who do the helping deserve to judge who is deserving of help and who deserves to suffer
Most people do all they can to support themselves. People don't want to be mooches. It's just a fact most of us need support from others, but people are socialized not to support each other.
