I'm glad to hear Bouie say "This regime is illegitimate" because it's a word that's been bouncing around in my head. I think it's a helpful framing and one that Democratic leaders internalize. Once you accept that this is an illegitimate, authoritarian regime, it should inform how you resist.

If the same fate befalls me, I only hope that I take a couple of them with me at least.
Only speaking personally, but today’s execution isn’t scaring me from protecting our neighbors, as some suggest is ICE’s goal. Nor am I angry with incandescent rage, in that I know such rage is unhelpful. Rather, I feel like it has forced me to truly accept that the same fate might befall me.

The United States has never been fully against authoritarianism. It dabbled in displays of anti-fascism in the late 20th Century when the elites realized how much money they could make growing a large middle class to which they could sell things, but apart from that, it’s an authoritarian sandwich.
