Consistent regular reminder that empathy for your fellow human being is a huge act of resistance. Care about people beyond just your friends and family. Care about strangers you've never met. Show them daily kindness. Remind everyone that suspicion and hosility should not be the baseline.

🧵It has been clear for years that a key difference between past instances of book banning and the present censorship cataclysm is that the banning happening now targets not only books, but librarianship as a profession and libraries as an institution. 1/4

It’s funny how the old media depiction of Nazis was always that they’re evil but dignified gentleman and now they’re openly just like “Hello. I’m the Anime Pedophile”

The only time my conservative side of the family got mad at the cops was when one of them killed a black bear. Even though we should care when the police kill any person, animal deaths cut through copaganda very effectively.

Ultimately, the death of US manufacturing is about this attitude. It's easy to say "buy american or stfu" because virtue signaling is free. But it's hard to actually sustain a business because many Americans simply don't want to pay what it costs to produce things ethically in this country
Someone on Twitter replies to me: "meh. buy american or stfu."

Two hours later, in a separate thread, the write: "$30 for a single button-up is ridiculous unless it is decent quality silk."

If you want cheap clothing and wanna be ethical about it, buy second hand at thrift stores. Don't buy new.
therationaldove.bsky.social
Basically any garment priced below 30 bucks *especially fitted shirts, pants or dresses* is exploitative. Hell, fitted shirts and pants should be at least 50 or more, since they are more work to make.
therationaldove.bsky.social
You'll also notice my estimate is more expensive than the tweet's cited maximum price for a fitted button up shirt, just to give you a sense of the floor here.
therationaldove.bsky.social
Obviously, I'm doing every step by hand so maybe my 2 hours of labor estimate could be knocked down further in a factory setting (2 hours to make a whole skirt seems extremely generous to me given the actual labor hours of this particular skirt is closer to 10-12 hours).
therationaldove.bsky.social
I'm making a simple pencil miniskirt for my sister. The lowest I could possibly see myself charging for something like this is $32-35 dollars (assuming cheapest fabric + 2 hours of labor at $15/hr).
therationaldove.bsky.social
As someone who recently got into sewing, it becomes very clear, very fast how unethical most pricing is for your average new garment. Most people would balk at the price if you actually paid workers fair wages.

This two-parter below is exactly why it's hard to make clothes in the United States.

Let's look at how much it costs to produce a button-up shirt in the US. 🧵

it’s amazing that it’s 2025 and people are still deluded enough to believe that age verification on the internet actually works

this was apparent to me when *I* was an extremely online child

My bff is a high school teacher and can verify that the (freshman) children are absolutely mobile gambling in high numbers, an activity that *already* has laws defining it as an adult-only activity requiring age verification

Anytime there is a flood in the continental US, it is the biggest story across all social media.

Apparently, the same as not true for a catastrophe in Alaska. There was a typhoon yesterday morning and much of western Alaska is now underwater with homes with people in them just floating away.

The notion that those who took part in slavery or conquest were merely abiding by the moral standards of their time necessary excludes those they targeted and kidnapped from those standards; *they* were never confused about this. But other white people were frequently disgusted by this stuff too!

Please remember that the disgust people have over Christopher Columbus is not based on some modern, 21st century “woke” ideology, but rather on contemporaneous accounts of atrocities that make many modern genocides appear quaint in comparison.

Below, are the accounts of Bartlomé de las Casas.
But too many of the slaves died in captivity. And so Columbus, desperate to pay back dividends to those who had in-vested, had to make good his promise to fill the ships with gold. In the province of Cicao on Haiti, where he and his men imagined huge gold fields to exist, they ordered all persons fourteen years or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they brought it, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Indians found without a copper token had their hands cut off and bled to death.
The Indians had been given an impossible task. The only gold around was bits of dust garnered from the streams. So they fled, were hunted down with dogs, and were killed. After each six or eight months' work in the mines, which was the time required of each crew to dig enough gold for melting, up to a third of the men died.
While the men were sent many miles away to the mines, the wives remained to work the soil, forced into the excruciating job of digging and making thousands of hills for cassava plants.
Thus husbands and wives were together only once every eight or ten months and when they met they were so exhausted and depressed on both sides... they ceased to pro-create. As for the newly born, they died early because their mothers, overworked and fam-ished, had no milk to nurse them, and for this reason, while I was in Cuba, 7000 children died in three months. Some mothers even drowned their babies from sheer desper-ation.... In this way, husbands died in the mines, wives died at work, and children died from lack of milk ... and in a short time this land which was so great, so powerful and fer-tile... was depopulated... My eyes have seen these acts so foreign to human nature, and now I tremble as I write....

ALSO. ALSO. Needing us to find Europeans who condemned him for his actions at the time--and there are many! So many! My God so many!--is also some white supremacist bullshit, because the TAINO PEOPLE HE WAS MURDERING CERTAINLY CONDEMNED HIM FOR IT AND THEY WERE HUMAN BEINGS OF HIS TIME TOO.

Christopher Columbus was dragged back to Spain in chains by a crusading knight, convicted of tyranny and immeasurable cruelty, pardoned by Isabella but banned from returning to Hispaniola.

Fuck Columbus.
