It is an indication that, for all of the money and the power, and the being on top of the world, you would never want to actually be Trump: he just cannot stop himself from being consumed by these little slights and grievances, and responding to every situation in the pettiest way imaginable.

My crankiest pedagogical idea is to do an intro to philosophy class that's all about first millennium theological controversies (Donatism, Arianism, Manichaeism, Iconoclasm, predestination) and try to figure out what they were about, why people cared about them, what modern analogues might be, etc.

This Department of WAR chest thumping belies the fact that Trump's interest is in using the military to kidnap some nannies, rough up some protesters, maybe murder some people on Caribbean boats, and definitely *not* in deterring peer competitors in Eastern Europe or Asia. So they have a free hand

In Trump 1, world leaders seem to have been a little unsettled about what his election meant, even while most of the national security establishment was still in place. In Trump 2, the likes of Xi, Putin, Netanyahu have taken the measure of the man, know he has no stomach for great power competition

And he's on his way to surrendering that, having his court in effect declaring that the law is the sovereign executive's will--so what do we need judicial review for? The more hopeful scenario is that future Democrats expand the court and limit its jurisdiction, due to his fecklessness

So it's his bad luck that these pet theories were brought to fruition by a rule-breaking psychopath like Trump. But then, if you wanted to preserve the court's institutional legitimacy, you'd want to demonstrate that the court has some reason for being as an independent branch of government

Expanding a little: Roberts seems to have been a conventional right wing jurist, who had some pet theories about law (the sovereign executive) that seem to me at odds with US constitutional design, but he probably thought they would be wielded by a Reagan-esque figure to brush back annoying libs

Roberts' #1 concern is said to be the institutional legitimacy of the court. If true, he could not be a more massive and complete failure. His weakness and cowardice leads to acquiescence, with the result that his court is an arm of a lawless regime completely at odds with the founders' vision.

Trump, a psychopathic rule-ignorer, pushed to the top, nearly lost his life and his freedom, and then won. He feels invincible, nothing can get in his way; this has a euphoric effect on his toadies, who think they'll never face any music; institutional elites with weak values are bowled over

As I keep trying to argue, Democrats should polarize the shit out of the vaccine/public health debate. Make people take sides. It will split Republicans and MAGA.
