Amazon forest resistance to drought is increased by diversity in hydraulic traits - Nature Communications
The hyper-diverse tropical forests of the Amazon store vast carbon stocks, but whether this diversity increases their resistance to future drought remains uncertain. This simulation study suggests that higher diversity in plant functional traits increases biomass resistance to both short- and long-term drought.

my takeaway from climate week nyc is that "climate storytelling" is a little too much "we must reimagine our deepest souls in relationship to mother nature and the moral abyss of the polycrisis into which we must now stare" and not enough "ok but get a heat pump"

I have a new @nytimes.com guest essay w/ @davidkeith.bsky.social about sunlight reflection. We note its not a solution for climate change and at best a band aid to treat systems, and suggest if its ever done it should only be to replace the cooling from air pollution today:

Those on an H1B cannot return to the US from tomorrow (Sunday) unless paying $100K. This is an out-of-the blue presidential action. We’ll see software engineers stranded abroad.

One easy to predict outcome: those on US visas will travel less… for work, for conferences etc.

Exactly… I am the same and have pivoted to just writing the TL:DR of what I want to say -on- the slide (in v. big text on account of my other I/O problem!). People who expect me to hear a whole different set of spoken info are hilariously optimistic, imho.

I still can’t quite believe @benmsanderson.bsky.social managed to pull this grassroots MIP-thing off (with no funding and no workshop and no CMIP infrastructure). My contribution to this paper was tbh mostly reigning in numerous more outlandish ideas, but that’s a lot of emotional labour, y’all.
