The thing about the claim that AI can speed up game production cycles is that game production cycles are not generally bottlenecked by the ability to make assets, and especially not low-quality replaceable assets

It's funny how if *you* tried selling your own stuff to yourself to get rich, people would laugh their asses off at you for being so foolish.

But when a billionaire does the exact same thing, somehow he actually does get richer.

I said this on Twitter a few years ago and someone got bringing-my-neighbors-chili levels of angry at me for "causing anxiety in people who can't attend." Absolutely bizarre interaction.
something I learned this year is you should invite people to things even if you know they can’t come. instead of it making them feel bad it actually makes them feel good

Impossible to even describe how many versions of this he could do. He could be the patron saint of the entire world. Instead, they'll have to bury him in a secure location because of how many people will try to piss on his grave.
The actor Michael Sheen used all his money to start a fake debt collecting business, buy 900 people in Wales's debt, and excused it. If Musk bought ALL $194 billion in medical debt in the U.S. and excused it in the same way, he'd still be the world's riches man by hundreds of billions of dollars.

It's a big problem at game studios and why so many have turned to algorithmic generation for placeholders - executives who know fuck-all about the game design process (despite claiming titles like "Lead Designer") will refuse to sign off on wireframe or sketches because they don't "look right".
it's mostly investors doing this to us, by the way. Yknow, the whole demand that assets look complete-ish at the concept stage? they don't know what a sketch is. The same thing happened to Disney with The Black Cauldron and it nearly bankrupted them. This is how bad having money erodes your brain

“AI is ok as long as it’s not taking anyone’s job” and whose work is it trained on. Did you forget that it’s a bunch of stolen fucking shit? Are we moving the goalposts already? “it’s sticking around so you have to get used to it, be realistic” no I don’t. Eat my shit and hair

Been thinking on the use of GenAi for mood boards. Ethics and legal risks aside, I truly believe using GenAi as references deprives one of many pivotal things.

Here’s a blurb on what I mean:

The fucked up thing about the adult game sweep on Itchio is that they weaponized trigger warnings and tags against developers trying to do the right thing, further cementing my belief that adult games only have two possible ratings: Banned and Not Yet
A bunch of lgbt comics and games etc were caught up in this, esp since the toxic yuri vn jam had just finished running and a lot of these games had extensive lists of content warnings b/c these games contained uncomfortable topics

But nothing was removed from itchio solely for being lgbt afaik

the good news is that the media attention and support from an audience has helped Horses do well enough that Santa Ragione has been able to pay all its owed royalties and loans. so it's not in debt.

the bad news is it's still not enough to keep the studio together.

Larian's horrible hirring process is an open secret in the industry – insane amounts of unpaid work in "writing tests", excessive numbers of interviews, months and months of back and forth, etc. Everyone in games narrative circles has heard the stories at this point, probably from multiple people.
I know this because they tried to recruit me and I strongly considered it but they’re also a “do an unpaid writing test where you have to also make it playable” company so that’s not something I vibe with

You can tell how cool and good AI is because every time someone announces they're using it they have to immediately rush to disclaim that actually they're only using it a LITTLE bit, just the tiniest bit, not even THAT much really. The future of art is here, and it's measured in acceptable ppm
"I didn’t say we use it to develop concept art" just to make reference, get ideas from and outline composition lmao
just 90% of what concept is🤣

Look man I don’t think the people being poisoned by data centers really care if you remove the generated assets before shipping, and I don’t really care if you “only” use the machine that stole my shit and convinced teens to off themselves for internal PowerPoints.

Cool motive. Still bullshit tho.

So the guy himself is saying they arent really even seeing productivity gains? He said they are just using AI because they are afraid of being left behind. He is inviting this public scorn by repeating techbro talking points for no benefit at all. The mind of a CEO is fascinating.
If I had known the two paragraphs about genAI in my article today would be so controversial, I would have expanded them a bit! Here's a rough transcript of the relevant portion of my interview with Swen Vincke, so everyone has all the context. (Full article here: www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...)

If your concept artists feel they have to use AI 'for exploration' its likely that your demands for the quantity/quality of the work vs time are too high?

Like..thats what sketching is for.

But some clients will not look at sketches, it always has to look like "concept art" [ polished paintings ]
