I am not sure I had seen Aftyn Behn’s first name until a few moments ago, but when I did, you can be sure I misread it and did a double take.

I feel like I have finally made it! Someone — undoubtedly with help from their AI pal — has cited a paper of mine that has the epistemological disadvantage of not existing.

Reference [2] here doesn’t exist: eprint.iacr.org/2025/2145.pdf

Reference [3] *is* real, but it sure isn’t cited very well.

For my newsletter, I wrote about that college essay scandal that's gone viral and what everyone is seeming to miss:

It's about ATTACKING TRANS PEOPLE!!!

That Viral Essay Scandal is (SURPRISE!) Actually About Trans People
A shoddy Oklahoma University essay went viral. Cis people think this is about conservatives whining for better grades. Trans people see a planned attack on a trans academic. (Note for free subscriber...

Thinking about all the people I know who, as grad students, were sexually harassed by faculty and got the world's largest 🤷‍♀️ from their university. Imagine a world with this kind of response to *actual* harm.
OU has put the professor here on administrative leave:

every trans person i see post about the OU suspension knows that the suspended target is trans & a grad student, & has an innate awareness that this is about purging trans employees. every cis person i see thinks the target is a rando professor & that this is about giving conservatives good grades

Back in 2018, on another platform, I noted this abomination and wrote:

“Come on, New Yorker, who styles ‘ZIP Code’ like this? If you’re going to eschew ‘zip code’ as too informal, then you need to capitalize the whole darn acronym.”

I’m old enough to have lived through the Sokol hoax and seen the glee and schadenfreude among some of the more arrogant STEM people about how “literary theorists will put any kind of nonsense in their journals.”
"Runctitiononal features"? "Medical fymblal"? "1 Tol Line storee"? This gets worse the longer you look at it. But it's got to be good, because it was published in Nature Scientific Reports last week: www.nature.com/articles/s41... h/t @asa.tsbalans.se

Congratulations to Omar El Akkad for winning the National Book Award for nonfiction. “One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This” is searing, and if you haven’t read it, you should.

But as he says in his acceptance speech, it is hard to feel celebratory about this well-deserved honor.

Today we honor the transgender lives taken by anti-trans violence. We hold their memory with love and stand with trans communities in grief, resilience, and strength.

May we deepen our solidarity and work for a world where all trans people can live safely and freely.

On this Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honor the trans people lost to violence in the U.S. this year.

Widespread poverty, homelessness, and discrimination makes trans people 4x more likely to experience violence than the average person.

We shouldn’t have to live in fear to be who we are.
